I can’t believe we ever second guessed going all in with walnut ceilings. Best. Decision. Ever. for our little mid century ranch.🤎

We’ve settled back into routines, which feels nice (I think?). Even better, summer is still hanging around, so we spent most weekends chasing the warmth and dipping our toes in the big lake as much as possible. And of course, our gorgey foster girl Sweet Pea stole our hearts — and everyone else’s.

What are you looking forward to most this October? I’ll go first.👇

10+ years with our plant pocket. I thought I would be more sad, but I suppose it goes to show that I’m ready for a fresh start.

Can’t wait to share the final plans for this wall! Be sure to follow along, because I hide the good stuff in Stories.🫶

It’s been 3 years since we installed our stand alone fireplace. I mean, is it even The Red House without it?

After purchasing the home in 2023, we planned for for the fireplace. We measured down to the 1/4″ to ensure proper clearances around it for the big sliding door. We adjusted walls, cabinets and future furniture layouts for it. In short, we considered the fireplace in every single decision we made until it was installed. So. Many. Micro. Decisions.

On YellowBrickHome.com, we’re giving you a big 3-year update, what model we have, why we chose it, what makes it a standout and more! Link in bio, friends.🫶🪵🔥

Can’t stop won’t stop using this slick walnut hardware. (You’ve seen this in our Red House kitchen, too!) Inspired by midcentury homes that focus on bringing the outdoors in, this hardware allows the wood tone to shine, exuding warmth and comfort. This wall is SO close to being complete, just need to check a few more items off the list before the full reveal!🤎

What do you think? Would you go all in with wood tones in your home?

Let’s walk through The Red House together! It takes only a minute, because our pint-sized midcentury ranch is just under 900 sq ft. 🤏♥️🌲

Her manageable size is one of our favorite parts about her, tied only with her thick, forested surroundings (okay, AND those walnut paneled ceilings!).

Sneak peek of the bookcase built-in and quad bunks, both works in progress.💪

Do you have a favorite part?

We can’t stop using decking—it’s been the best decision for our porches and decks. 🤭

When we began planning this year’s exterior renovation, we knew it was time to rebuild both the front and back porches. Luckily, we already knew exactly what we wanted: the same TimberTech decking we used at our Red House last year.

We chose Antique Leather for its warmth, plus TimberTech’s Impression Rail Express for the railings.TimberTech gives us the outdoor spaces we know will last through every Chicago season. It’s built to resist moisture, mold, insects, fading, cracking, rot, shall I go on?

And a ‘thank you!’ to the talented team for going with our last minute ideas and design pivots and building what we envisioned from the ground up. Arthur and his team were kind, collaborative and detail-oriented.

Have you used TimberTech decking and railings? Tell me your favorite color!

Chicago lots are standard across the city, and most homes have the same size 10-15’ deep front yard. Wide enough to put a path in, spacious enough to lay down a picnic blanket. By US standards, it may seem ridiculously small, yet we’ve never yearned for anything more. I think small spaces breed creativity, and we’re always up for the challenge to make the most of it!

In 2021, we worked with a local landscaper to help us plan for a (mostly) native front yard. Something that would give our home soft edges, lots of movement, boatloads of texture and a few color pops.🌿🌼🤍🌱

5 years later, the plants have matured, the ground cover is taking over the mulch, the bees are busy, and everything is settling into itself. It’s full, soft, and feels like it was always meant to be this way.
