Over the past decade, interior designer Michael Del Piero has created a distinctive aesthetic fusing rough with luxurious and blending ancient with modern. She achieves poetic balance by mastering scale and proportions, texture and tone. Her effortless and livable interiors are as current as they are enduring, as sophisticated as they are comfortable and as unusual as they are beautiful. Fueled by world travel and an appetite for all things beautiful, Michael travels consistently in search of the most unusual and distinctive items for both clients and her eponymous boutique, located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, showcasing sculptural furniture, unusual objects and abstract art.

STUDY OF METAL

Aged. Tarnished. Better for it.

Nobody wants the shiny one. Not really. They want the brass that’s gone dark where the hands held it. The iron with a little rust in the seams. The bowl that’s been dropped, picked up, and kept anyway.

None of it’s perfect. All of it’s real. Small, heavy things that already lived a whole life before they got here, and don’t care much what you think of them.

Come find one.

TRAVELED. TEXTURAL.

The thread through every room we design and every page of our monograph.

Pieces from different places and centuries, joined by one logic: made by hand, softened by time.

Texture is evidence. It gives a room memory before anyone moves in.

A SALON STYLE

This family lives with music, and they wanted a room that could hold it: seats for ten, gathered close, without losing the grace of the classic architecture.

The answer was a salon. One long banquette turns the corner in mohair, chosen for its depth and the way it softens sound. Underfoot, a Turkish rug reads as texture first, ornament second. Everything draws inward, toward the music and toward each other.

The salon was never about size. It was about intimacy, and this room was made for listening.

ENTRY NOT A PASSTHROUGH

For this couple, both fluent in fashion and unafraid of a strong point of view, we didn’t treat the room as a pass-through. We treated it as a thesis.

Original millwork and the bones of the house stay intact. Against them, we set pieces from other periods and places: something sculptural, something worn by hand, something unexpected in scale. None of it matches. All of it agrees.

Blending styles is not about collecting. It is about tension held in balance. A room built from a single period reads as a set. A room built from many reads as a life. Their wardrobes already work this way: vintage beside new, tailored beside undone. The entry simply speaks the same language.

The outcome is a first impression that doesn’t announce itself. It is quieter than a statement, and it stays with you longer.

RELAXED SLUMBER

What these white bedrooms share is ease. The linen is washed, the plaster is soft, and the wood shows its years. Nothing is precious. White, in every one, is less a color than a texture.

What sets them apart is place. In Chicago, white holds a lifetime’s collection. In the Hamptons, it takes on the light of the sea. In Palm Beach, it cools the glare. Some rooms are full, and others hold a bed, a chair, and one good old thing.

Same language, different conversations.

WHAT A ROOM IS MADE OF

A room is resolved through scale, proportion, palette, light and the way it is lived in. That is the architecture of our work.

What gives it depth is the sourcing. Quality, craft and patina. Provenance. The evidence of the hand. Materials that have been used, repaired, and made better by time.

The same eye runs through the studio and our Hamptons shop: rooms assembled from things that have earned their place. Michael Del Piero | Hamptons

A room is only as good as what is in it.

RESTRAINED

A Mediterranean home, taken down to its bones and rebuilt with quiet conviction. Years ago and yet the rooms remain exactly as intended: calm, considered, and entirely at ease.

RESTYLING is its own discipline.

Nothing new for the sake of new, just a closer look at what was already there. Moved, removed and considered. A familiar house, a fav client, calm, cool and collected.

TEXTILES

Text and textile come from the same word: texere, to weave.

A room reads the way a sentence does, line by line, thread by thread.
We layer throws and pillows the way we’d edit a paragraph: for rhythm, for weight, for what the hand finds before the eye does.

Linen that softens with every wash. Wool that holds warmth and shadow.
None of it is meant to stay pristine. It’s meant to be used until it has something to say.

A SMALL KITCHEN inside a large, open room has two options: disappear or hold its ground. We chose the second.

In an open plan, the kitchen is never just a kitchen. It is seen from the sofa, the dining table, the front door. At this scale, a pale kitchen would have read as an afterthought, swallowed by the volume around it. Black gave it weight. It draws the eye, anchors the far end of the room, and gives a compact footprint the presence of something much larger. Dark finishes don’t shrink a space here; they define it.

But black alone can feel severe. Overhead, reclaimed wood brings the room back to human temperature. The boards carry their history in nail holes, saw marks and uneven patina, texture that can’t be manufactured. Above a dark kitchen, it reads as warmth rather than contrast: the cool and the aged, held in balance.
