Myth. If your floors squeak, something is structurally wrong with the house.
Usually it is not that dramatic.
In a lot of Clarksville homes a squeak comes from a few very ordinary things. Floor boards rubbing against each other as indoor humidity drops in the fall. Fasteners that have worked slightly loose over decades of foot traffic. A subfloor that flexes a little in a hallway or at a stair landing. Older hardwood that has dried and shrunk just enough to make contact in a new spot.
That does not mean you should ignore it. It means a sound alone is not a verdict.
What is worth a closer look.
A floor that feels soft or spongy underfoot.
A new slope or dip that was not there before.
A squeak that shows up along with a visible crack in the ceiling below it.
Movement near a bathroom, a laundry area, or any spot with water nearby.
Those are the cases where it makes sense to have someone take a look instead of turning up the television.
If a repair does turn out to be needed, the work is often small and focused rather than a full floor replacement.
