October is National Crime Prevention Month, and this Saturday, Oct. 24, is Make a Difference Day.

Some of the best crime prevention in Ohio doesn't come in a box. It's the neighbor who grabs your packages while you're out of town, the porch light left on, the quick text when something looks off.

So tell us: what's one thing your street does to look out for each other? Share it in the comments, and tag the neighbor who always has your back.

At Gillmore Security, it's our own people. We've protected Ohio homes and businesses since 1971, and today your alarm signals go to our local, in-house command center, staffed by Gillmore associates.

Many security companies send their alarms to outside wholesale monitoring centers that handle accounts for lots of other companies. We keep monitoring in-house so we control how every dispatch is handled, start to finish.

Three generations in, that's still how we do it.

Before you sign with any provider, ask these four questions:
1. Are you accredited with the Better Business Bureau?
2. Can you share local references?
3. Where is your monitoring center, and who staffs it?
4. Who services my equipment after installation?

We have been protecting Ohio families and businesses since 1971, and we welcome every one of these questions. We are BBB accredited, and our monitoring is handled in-house by our own associates.

Ask us anything.

Halloween is a week from Saturday. A few reminders from the National Fire Protection Association:
• Use battery-operated lights in jack-o'-lanterns instead of real candles.
• Keep cornstalks, hay bales, and paper decorations away from light bulbs, heaters, and open flames.
• Keep every exit clear, inside and out.

Testing your smoke detectors while you're at it? If your system is monitored, call our command center first so the test isn't treated as a real alarm. (800) 899-8995

In 1921, a group of Cleveland candymakers handed out thousands of boxes of candy to newsboys, orphans, and others who could use a little kindness. More than a century later, the third Saturday in October is still Sweetest Day, and this year it falls on October 17.

So tell us: where do you go for the sweetest treat in Cleveland or Akron? A bakery, a candy shop, an ice cream stand? Share it in the comments and give a local favorite some love.

From all of us who have called Northeast Ohio home since 1971, have a sweet weekend.

When security and fire detection are planned during construction, wiring, sensor placement, and keypad locations can be designed around how you will actually use the space. That means fewer compromises later.

Our new construction team handles installation and project coordination for homes and businesses across Northeast Ohio and Dayton, from burglary and fire alarms to access control and digital video.

Talk to us early in your project.

New hires, new hours, a reworked floor plan, an added stockroom. Businesses change, and security plans should keep up.

A solid plan starts with a methodical look at your space and your operations:
- Which doors and areas need restricted access, and who needs to get in?
- Where would video help most: entrances, registers, loading docks, parking?
- Do fire detection and specialty alerts, like temperature or carbon monoxide monitoring, cover the right spaces?

We work with businesses across Northeast Ohio and Dayton on access control, digital video, fire alarm systems, and monitoring. Call to talk through a security needs analysis for your space.

Many security systems send signals to their monitoring center over a phone line or internet connection. When that service changes, for example a move from a landline to VoIP or a new router, the path your alarm uses to reach help can change too.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a good reminder that every connected device in your home deserves attention, including your security system.

Planning a change to your phone or internet service? Call us first and we will help make sure your system keeps communicating.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. A natural gas leak or a sudden temperature drop can go unnoticed while you're at work or away for the weekend. Gillmore specialty alert systems watch for carbon monoxide, natural gas, and temperature changes, backed by monitoring from our own associates.
