Hello Friends. Happy Fall (well you know it's Texas).

It is time for the following Yard and Garden updates.

1. Fertilize and add w**d preventers to your yard. Normally you should start this in September but with our crazy temperatures we can go October to November as long as there is no Frost coming. Pay attention to that.

2. Mulching for the fall and winter months. October to November. Before the 1st hard freeze.

Here are some really good rules to follow when mulching.

1. Water first. This gives the roots a strong base line and helps trap moisture in.

2. You need to mulch at least 2 to 3 inches deep. This is your target depth. If you need to reapply mulch check and see if the old mulch is moldy before adding new.

3. Keep it Off tree, shrub and stems. You do not want to see those mulch volcanoes around the base of any plant.

4. Avoid using hay or manure that you do not know where it came from. Some may contain harmful bugs, or pesticides.

Do Not Mulch around the following - They Do Not Like It
Lavendar, Russian Sage, Yarrow, Mediterranean Herbs, Bearded Irises, Succulents, Sedums, Evergreens, Lambs Ear, and any Native Reseeders,

Plants that Love Mulch are as follows - Hydrangeas, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Hostas, Coral Bells, Fruit Trees.

And as always, Keep your thumbs green and let us know if we can be of help cleaning up your gardens and flower beds.

Good morning my friends. Well we finally got that rain we needed. So naturally we all start thinking about cutting back plants and cleaning up our beds. Here are some plants we do not cut back in the fall.
1. Ornamental grasses of any type. Shape them in the Spring.
2. Sedum
3. Conflowers- Echinaea (birds eat from them in the winter)
4. Rudbeckia - Blackeyed Susans (birds eat from them in the winter)
5. Butterfly W**d-Asclepias. These are slop to emerge in the Spring.
6. Lavender. Wait until Spring
7. Russian Sage. Wait until Spring
8. Chrysanthemums. Yes you can plant these in your beds not just containers. Wait until Spring when you see new growth then trim them back.
9. Asters. (birds eat from them in the winter) cut back in the Spring to about 6 inches.
10. Hellebores
11. Joe Pye W**d
12. Anise Hyssop
13. Coral Bells - Heuchera
14. Dianthus. Wait until Spring.
15. Yarrow. Wait until Spring.
16. Bee Balm - Monarda
17. Penstemon
18. Baptisia - False Indigo
19. Leadwort - Ceratostigma (this is from the Plumbago family)
20. Liatris - Blazing Star

Leave your Daylilies until Spring then divide them and only divide them every 3 to 5 years.
