What a summer it has been here in Western Oklahoma.
With over 60 days above 100°F, 120 days above 90°F, and only 8 inches of rain since June 5th, this has been one of the most challenging growing seasons we’ve endured in quite some time.
We have now received over 4” of rain in the last 4 days!
There were plenty of long days spent dragging water hoses, trying to keep everything alive, and wondering when we might finally catch a break from the heat and drought.
But we made it through, and with cooler weather finally on the horizon, we’re looking forward to one of our favorite times of the year — fall planting!
If this summer taught us anything, it’s that you can never have too much shade. The best time to start planting shade for next summer is NOW!
Here at Sunshine Nursery, we’ve always had a passion for growing trees that can withstand the challenges of the Southern Great Plains. This fall, we’ll have a wonderful selection of native and adapted trees available, including many unique and hard-to-find species that you simply won’t find at your typical garden center.
Trees that aren’t just beautiful, but trees that have a purpose. Trees that can endure our heat, wind, drought, and everything else Oklahoma decides to throw at them.
Our hope is that the trees we grow today will provide shade, beauty, and enjoyment for generations to come, just as the trees planted by those before us have done.
We appreciate everyone who has supported our little family nursery through another difficult growing season. Your continued support allows us to keep doing what we love growing, experimenting, educating, and introducing new and exciting trees to Western Oklahoma.
Here’s to cooler days, planting trees, and a little more shade next summer!
