A few weeks ago I was contacted about helping a client take back control of a yard which had been neglected and overgrown. We chose to start renovations this fall by cleaning out and replanting a number of different matrix style plantings. Each one covering all 3 seasons with blooms.
Today we were able to get all of our plants into their forever home!! 217 plants representing 40 different species were selected for this project!! Some have already begun their trip into dormancy but the beds still look beautiful when planted in dense communities ❤️ ❤️
The front door beds are designed to have Showy blooms such as Purple Coneflower - Rattlesnake Master - Culvers Roots - 4 different species of Milkweed then bordered by the ever lovely Purple Lovegrass.
The back porch bed was designed with a focus on controlling the height of the planting. The Monarda and Rudbeckia would get to tall and block sight lines down to the river. So this design is dominated by sedges - Eastern Star Sedge - Woodland Sedge - Graceful Sedge. Then complimented with early blooming species like Violets, Virginia Waterleaf, Wild Geraniums, and Lupines. We still had fun in the corner by the stairs with a few additions of Royal Catchfly, 3 species of milkweed, a New Jersey Tea, Silky Aster, and prairie pussytoes!!
Next spring and summer will be such a treat for our client as they experience the new play of blooms highlighted by the insect actors which accompany it!! Thank you so much for the opportunity to help create healthier, diverse habitats for all of nature's critters!! Your choices matter, what can you do to help support our native ecosystem from your own yards??
