Before and after from a kitchen in Cordova on Tuesday. Junior swapped out the old fixtures and hung:
- 2 kitchen pendants over the island
- 1 chandelier over the breakfast table
- 1 entry light
- 1 linear light

The small photo is the same kitchen before. Same room, same ceiling boxes, a whole different look.

If you've already bought the lights, the hard part is getting them up, level and wired right, especially over an island or up a tall entry ceiling. That's the part we handle.

Here's what John and Tyler, two of our electricians, found under a house in September.

Outlets and lights in part of the home had quit. The cause was under the floor: the wiring connections had burnt up, the black lumps of melted tape you see in the photo.

They replaced the burnt connections. Every receptacle and light came back on, and the small photo shows the tester lit up afterward.

Here's the part worth knowing. When a few outlets go dead at once, they're usually on the same circuit, and the problem is often a connection somewhere along that run, not the outlet you're staring at. Heat at a bad connection is how wiring ends up looking like this. If yours went dead, or you smell something hot near a switch or outlet, turn that circuit off at the breaker and have it looked at.

Shoutout to the crew.

Last winter in Olive Branch: six Mitsubishi mini-split systems plus an air filtration unit, all in one commercial building. Line sets run, everything pressure- and vacuum-tested, charged, and checked. That's all six outdoor units getting charged up at once.

Tonight's low in Collierville is 47, and every night this week is in the upper 40s. If your heat is about to run for the first time since spring, here's a 5-minute check you can do yourself. No tools.

1. Change the filter. Hold it up to a light. If you can't see through it, swap it. The size is printed on the edge.
2. Wake up the thermostat. Fresh batteries if it takes them. Switch it to HEAT, set it a few degrees above room temp, and listen for it to start.
3. Clear the airflow. Rugs and furniture off floor vents and the big return grille. Got a heat pump? Rake leaves and pine straw away from the outdoor unit.
4. Test your CO alarm. Press the test button. NFPA says test monthly and have one outside each sleeping area and on every level.

If the heat doesn't come on in step 2, that's the time to call, not at 10 pm on the first cold night.

This Collierville house had an old electrical panel with no main shutoff, and no smoke alarms anywhere.

We put in a new 200-amp panel with new breakers and added four smoke alarms. It passed the Town of Collierville’s final electrical inspection in March.

Old panels don’t always look scary. If breakers keep tripping, the panel cover feels warm, or you just don’t know how old yours is, we’ll take a look. Call or text (901) 262-5931.

Quick question: when's the last time anyone looked at your heat?

It's been sitting since spring. The first cold nights of the season are on the way this weekend, and that's a rough time to find out something's off.

We're booking fall heat checks now. Gas furnace or heat pump, attic or closet — a tech will look it over and tell you straight what we find. Call or text (901) 262-5931.

First time turning the heat on this fall and the house smells like something's burning?

Usually that's just dust. It settles on the furnace and in the ducts all summer, and it burns off the first few times the heat runs. Trane says to let it run and the smell should fade. Starting the season with a clean filter helps.

It's NOT the normal dust smell if:
1. It's still strong after about an hour, or getting stronger. Turn the heat off at the thermostat and get it looked at.
2. It smells like hot plastic or wiring, or you see smoke. Turn it off.
3. It smells like rotten eggs. That can be gas. Leave the house first, then call MLGW or 911 from outside.

One more thing: a normal smell tells you nothing about carbon monoxide, because CO has no smell at all. Make sure your CO alarm works.

Some homes need more than a repair. They need a fresh start.

If you know an elderly neighbor, a disabled family member, or someone who has been making do for too long, Comfortable LLC would be grateful to hear their name. We're giving a brand new Trane system to one person in need, and we'd love for you to nominate them.

That's what this 2013 Generac was doing when Jr and John got out to it this summer. They ran Generac's diagnostic tests with Generac tech support on the line and replaced the ignition parts, but the real culprit turned out to be a bad relay. New relay, new battery, and it's running right.
