Calicarpa Americana or American Beautyberry is a well known native that thrives in our area. These beautiful berries show up in late summer and go through fall providing a great food source for wildlife. Clusters of small white flowers show in late spring to summer and attract pollinators. Also, when crushed, the leaves have been known to repel mosquitoes and other biting insects.
Beautyberry likes sun to partial shade but doesn’t tolerate full shade. These deciduous shrubs grow 3-8 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide. Prune in late winter to 1 foot as the flowers and berries are both produced on new growth.
Plant in naturalized areas, landscaped yards, butterfly gardens, or in a container on your patio or deck.
