Monarch roosting activity continues, especially in Texas. Yesterday, we received five more roost reports from Texas, the largest of which was estimated at 1,000 butterflies.
Monarchs migrate alone during the day but cluster in trees or shrubs at night. Locating these clusters, called roosts, gives us a good idea of where migrating monarchs are throughout the season. The monarchs photographed here, in Brownfield, Texas, are likely headed for the oyamel fir forests of Mexico's Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, nearly 1,000 miles south.
Thank you to everyone who has reported a fall sighting to Journey North. Keep them coming!
