Williamsville North High School in Buffalo, NY, is the high school home of Rob Gronkowski. We floored its weight room in 3,852 square feet of Thor Pro Tile, a custom green speckle we blended to match the school’s colors.

Pro Tile is our beveled-edge modular rubber tile, a full inch thick at 24 by 24 inches, with an inner layer that keeps the corners from peaking. It is made for free weight areas and lifting platforms, and here it runs the length of the room, under the racks and out under the cardio.

Then there are the platforms. Each one carries a Spartan inlaid into the tile, almost five feet high, the largest that would fit.

It started with Gold's Gym Crofton, Glen Burnie, and Ritchie Station which went in together, for one franchisee across Maryland.

Ten years later that Gold's Gym group has around 100,000 square feet of Thor Performance Turf in more than twelve gyms across two states. A blend of Thunder 55, Thunder 40, and our Portable Turf Panels, spec'd application by application.

Crofton shows what that looks like on the ground. An agility field indoors, a functional fitness space out front, five yard lines, hash marks and multi-color logos inlaid into the turf and shaped on site.

Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders put a two-story tube slide in the middle of its library. They came to us while it was still on paper, for the surface it lands on.

Thunder Play runs under the slide and across the play area, with a special turf finish we made for this space and spec'd to the fall height.

Most gyms run one thickness across the whole floor. Different parts of the room do different work, so one number rarely fits all of it.

A quarter-inch for light duty use, or three-eighths inch for general fitness, cardio and machines, is a great starting point. Where weights get dropped, go to three-quarter inch or one inch thick with a hybrid acoustic layer. It dissipates more of the impact and protects the floor underneath.

You don’t need a thicker floor everywhere. You need it where the weight lands.

The Olympic sports weight room is usually the busiest floor in a college athletic department. Football has its own. Everyone else shares this one, all year, every year.

Temple University's is Thor Pro Tile in TPR 16, the beveled edge modular tile we developed back in the early 1990s, with an inner layer that keeps the corners from peaking under that kind of load. A Temple T marks every station.

SPIN San Francisco is a table tennis club with a bar in it. Tables, tiered seating, and people on their feet around all of it until close.

The playing floor is Thor Performance Vinyl in Anthracite. Cushioned sports vinyl, shock absorbing underneath, non-porous on top. It holds traction through quick direction changes, takes the standing hours, and wipes clean in a room where drinks sit beside the tables.

Adrian College trains its athletes in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. Racks end to end, platforms, dumbbells, a turf lane.

The floor is Thor Resi24 in TPR 7 and 100% yellow. The A, the C, the paw prints, and the lane stripes are inlaid in it, and 24mm rolled rubber over a sound and vibration reduction pad, built to take what gets dropped on it. Thunder 40 in green for the turf lane.

Twelve years in, still the same floor.

A pop up gym is a different job than a permanent one. The room was built for something else, the window to install the floor is short, and whatever is underneath has to come back the way you found it.

Greene St. Kitchen at the Palms Resort became the Dragon's Lair pop up gym for Olympia weekend. Rubber tile across three weightlifting zones, in and out on an event schedule, under four straight days of the strongest people in the sport.

A gym in a landmark lobby is a harder job than a gym in a box. The building comes first. The floor has to work around marble and stonework nobody is allowed to touch, and still take barbells and sleds every day.

That was the job at the Under Armour Performance Center, inside 10 Light Street in Baltimore. A full training floor running the length of the old banking lobby, colored and laid out for the room it sits in, custom work and all.
