🚌 What Happens When Hanging Baskets Get on the Struggle Bus — and Why
A friend shared these pictures with me, and because we love her, **we will NOT be naming names while we throw her under the bus. 😂** Her friend had even suggested she return the baskets to where she bought them.
Instead, we had a little heart-to-heart about what was *really* going on. And honestly, these are some of the most common hanging basket problems I see!
💦 1. They aren’t getting enough water
Hanging baskets are traditionally pretty small for the amount of plant they’re holding. That gorgeous 12" basket you bought in May can be **packed full of roots by mid-June**, which means there isn’t much soil left to hold moisture.
**The FIX:**
Water daily during warm weather and often twice a day during really hot weather.
But here’s the important part: the root ball actually has to ABSORB the water.
When potting mix gets really dry, it can shrink away from the sides of the basket. You can pour water on top, watch it rush down the edges and out the bottom, and think, "Well, I watered it!" Meanwhile, the center of the root ball is still bone dry.
Water slowly and thoroughly. If it’s extremely dry, give it a little water, let it soak in, then come back and water again.
✂️ 2. They aren’t getting haircuts
This one is HARD because nobody wants to cut off flowers!
But if you wait until your petunias are long, leggy and scraggly—with flowers only at the very ends—you’ve waited too long.
**The FIX:**
Trim them back by about 1/4 to 1/3 before they start looking terrible.
Yes, they may look a little sad for a few days. Yes, you may question all of your life choices while cutting off perfectly good blooms. 😂
DO IT ANYWAY.
They’ll branch, fill back in and give you a much prettier basket for the rest of the season.
🌱 3. They aren’t getting enough fertilizer
Petunias are HEAVY FEEDERS. All that growth and blooming takes a lot of nutrients.
Yellowing leaves can also be a sign that your plants aren’t getting enough available iron, and petunias especially benefit from *chelated iron*.
**The FIX:**
Use a good-quality, water-soluble fertilizer regularly.
➡️ Watering once a day? Fertilize about once a week.
➡️ Watering twice a day because of the heat? You may need to feed twice a week, since frequent watering also flushes nutrients from that small amount of soil.
🪴 And one of my favorite solutions…
GO BIGGER!
Replant your hanging baskets into a larger basket when you bring them home—or buy larger baskets to begin with. We recommend self watering baskets!
More soil means:
* More room for roots
* More moisture retention
* More available nutrients
* Less stress during hot weather
* And a fuller, prettier basket for MUCH longer
So if your hanging basket is currently riding the struggle bus, don’t give up on it just yet. A good soaking, a haircut and a little dinner might be exactly what it needs. 🌸💦✂️
And to my unnamed friend…you know who you are. 😂❤️
