Before the handles and before the sink, the countertop already knows what kind of kitchen it is going to be.

The stone is in. The reddish-brown shaker cabinets are set below it. The walls behind it are still warm yellow-beige from before the backsplash arrives. There are no appliances, no hardware, no faucet. And yet the room has a point of view. The soft white stone with its thin linear veining tells the flat panel door what it is working with — not competing, settling in.

Everything inside it — the double basin, the high-arc faucet, the stone that runs edge to edge across the top — is decided by that choice.
