Look up before winter does it for you.

Once the leaves are down, every weak limb over your roof, driveway or power line is fully exposed — and the first ice storm or nor'easter is what finds it. A dead branch that costs a few hundred to remove in September costs a lot more when it comes through the roof in January.

Late fall is also the right time to prune. Trees are dormant, cuts heal clean, and there's no leaf canopy in the way.
