Simple things make me happy. I swear it. Some people need a big go-go-go existence. I need a quiet morning, birds chirping, burbling water, the wind blowing, and an occasional vacation. šŸ„°šŸ˜‚ā˜ŗļø

This is what 47 looks like. It’s birdwatching and coneflowers for me - that’s officially my midlife crisis.

In bloom right now, late June, in my new and new-ish gardens. Perennials take 3 years to look their best and so we are on our way to the dream garden. šŸŖ so.many.baby.plants but they have promise!

A mailbox garden has been on the drawing board since the day we moved in. There’s nothing better than a rainbow of color to welcome the family home after a long day. I hope the kids think of this space when they look back to their childhood memories of running out to meet ā€œMailman Bobā€ to collect the daily post. This spot is surrounded by dry soil and hot pavement, then gets clobbered by sidewalk salt and a mountain of snow for the winter so plant choices had to be strategic. And even then, I’m
going to keep a close watch to see what can take the heat of this hellstrip/parkway spot. So far, it’s flourishing with very little supplemental watering. Echinacea ’Pow Wow White’, Yarrow ā€˜Moonshine’, Salvia ā€˜Rose Marvel’, and Agastache Hyssop ā€˜Black Adder’ with a baby Clematis ā€˜Ville de Lyon’ twining up the mailbox itself.

Terracotta… I’ve streamlined my containers to all terracotta. Some have ā€œpatinaā€ from a fun lime washing project with the kids a few summers back and others are aging to a cloudy white because of all of the minerals in our hard water. Just last week I picked up this sweet little terracotta house at my local thrift store - and maybe I’ll pop a candle in there for a bit of whimsical ambiance in the evenings….
