Pingree Detroit

Pingree Detroit We believe anything is possible & if you see a better way, find a way to make it happen. We are not interested in greenwashing.

Worker-owned design and manufacturing cooperative in Detroit handcrafting urban utility footwear, home and pet goods, and accessories with leather, seat belts, and air bags upcycled from the Detroit auto industry. We see an opportunity in Detroit to make high-quality, veteran-made footwear & gear that redefines sustainability and maximizes the health and well-being of our workforce, our neighbors, and our customers. Putting Motor City Soul into Sustainable Shoes

SUSTAINABLE: Pingree Mfg affirms our responsibility to steward the life giving systems around us and make decisions that benefit and protect life 7 generations from now. We have work to do so we can make a sustainable product that meets our standards. We improve our watersheds by eliminating all harmful chemicals from the entire life cycle of our process and invite competitors and partners to do the same. We seek to become carbon neutral, toxic free, and source our materials from the Great Lakes Watershed as quickly as possible. LOCAL: When we do well our neighbors and community do well. The impact of every Detroit-made Pingree purchase is multiplied because we source materials and brilliance locally. Profits are shared with our workers, investors, surrounding community, and other social impact initiatives that benefit veterans or contribute to neighborhood restoration and resilience. We have an opportunity to do more than pay a living wage. We want to change how our community wages a living!

Some jobs are dirty. Some jobs require grit and craftsmanship. We’re proud to be displaying our work today at Michigan Central thanks to Ford Pro and Ford Motor Company for the the essential economy summit and doing live shoe making. The amazing Mike Rowe himself from Dirty Jobs stopped by and saw our handywork in action.

Ever wonder why we’re named Pingree Detroit? Hint: the street is named after the same guy.
•
Over a hundred years ago, Hazen S. Pingree changed the destiny of Detroit. As the owner of the second largest footwear company in the US, he created jobs for hundreds, including his fellow veterans. As a progressive mayor of Detroit during times of great adversity, he started urban farms, ended corporate and political corruption and restored the utility companies to public control. He worked hard to maximize the well-being of the people he was elected to serve.

In that spirit, our Pingree company is teaching Detroiters, especially US veterans, new skills in industrial sewing, shoemaking, and leather crafting. We’re also teaching entrepreneurship, creating pathways for every maker on our team to become co-owners. Employing Detroiters. Creating something beautiful and useful. We think Mayor Pingree would be proud.

Pingree Detroit honors Hazen S. Pingree, a shoemaker, Civil War Veteran, four-term Mayor of Detroit, and 24th Governor of Michigan. His legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and community empowerment inspires our mission to create sustainable products while supporting Veterans and Detroiters.
