🚗 Every crossing has a story, and some stories become part of a family's legacy.

Today, we're giving a special shout-out to one of our wonderful followers, Justin Gagnon, for sharing a meaningful piece of Detroit-Windsor Tunnel history with us!

Justin's grandfather, Marty Walls. dedicated 27 years of service to the Tunnel on the side before retiring in 1992 at the age of 63.

Recently, Justin shared a historic Detroit Free Press newspaper clipping that his grandfather proudly kept framed in his home for years, along with a photograph of his uniform hat. After Marty's passing, Justin inherited these treasured keepsakes and continues to display them in his own home today.

What makes this story so special is the legacy behind these items. They're more than pieces of Tunnel history. They're reminders of the dedicated people who helped connect both communities for generations.

Today, Sunday, October 18th, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will once again welcome thousands of runners for one of the most unforgettable experiences of the 2026 Detroit Free Press Marathon!

For the 49th year, runners will travel between two countries and experience the Tunnel's iconic “underwater mile,” the world's only official underwater international mile! 🇺🇸🇨🇦

For one special morning, the Tunnel transforms from a daily border crossing into a once-in-a-lifetime experience, connecting people, communities, and runners from around the world.

🚨 IMPORTANT TRAVEL ALERT: The Tunnel will be closed to all vehicle traffic on Sunday, October 18, from 6:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Normal operations will resume at 10:15 a.m. Please plan your travel accordingly.

The 2026 Detroit Free Press Marathon, presented by MSU Federal Credit Union, is taking over the streets of this weekend! Whether you're running, cheering, or traveling downtown, be sure to plan ahead!

🚨 Important Closure: The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will be closed to motorists on Sunday, October 18, from 6:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. to accommodate marathon runners.

As we recognize the federal holiday in the United States, we also extend our warmest wishes to our Canadian neighbors celebrating ! 🍁

Please note that the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel administrative office will be closed today, Monday, October 12, in observance of the federal holiday. The Tunnel remains open for travelers.
