Small, steady additions add up. In Delta Worms’ first four weeks, about one-eighth of a cubic yard of material was added each week. As new material went on, the original mulch settled and became more compact, so the rick’s shape changed as both layers built up.

Wonderful to see Barbara and Bob Cecchini recognized for there many years of service and dedication to local agriculture through the Farm Bureau! 🌱

The Urban Edge Farm has been one of Delta Worms’ biggest supporters, and we’re grateful for their encouragement and support along the way. People who support local farms and small businesses make a lasting difference in our community.

Thank you, Barbara, Bob and The Urban Edge Farm, for all you do. Well-deserved recognition!

For over 30 years, Barbara Cecchini has been a proud Contra Costa County Farm Bureau member, advocating for California farmers and experiencing firsthand the power of collective action.

Barbara’s family farm, Cecchini & Cecchini, was once a thriving asparagus operation in California. But trade challenges, rising labor costs and the lack of an effective farm labor program forced them to close by 2018. Through it all, the Farm Bureau remained a constant source of support, fighting for policies to help farmers navigate these obstacles.

🗣 "The Farm Bureau tirelessly advocated for farmers and lobbied for meaningful reforms to support agriculture. While a comprehensive farm labor program has yet to be achieved, it has not been for lack of effort on the part of the Farm Bureau. Their persistent work has been a source of hope and a testament to the power of collective advocacy." – Barbara Cecchini

Today, Barbara and her family run The Urban Edge Farm, an organic farm offering UPick experiences, a farm store, and hands-on educational programs for children. Their mission is to connect the community with fresh, locally grown food and sustainable farming.

🌱 Why is Farm Bureau membership worth it? Barbara emphasizes its role in advocacy, water rights, labor reform, and building a strong farming community—all at an affordable cost.

💬 "Farmers are independent by nature, but strength comes in numbers. The Farm Bureau unites farmers into a cohesive group, amplifying their influence and ensuring that agriculture remains a priority in public policy and economic development."

Thank you, Barbara, for your dedication to agriculture and for sharing your story!

A worm rick takes shape one thoughtful layer at a time. Delta Worms’ first four weeks began with mulch, then worms and compost, followed by about one-eighth of a cubic yard of material each week. The update follows the watering, temperature checks, and side-to-side feeding approach, helping the worm population grow while castings develop.

A garden can be a work in progress and still be growing beautifully.

We’re treating this garden as something to develop over time: some plants may move, new ones may be added, and a few areas will change as we learn what works. Giving the garden time makes room for those discoveries.

🪱 Four weeks ago, we started with a row of mulch. Today, our worm rick is taking shape!

A worm rick is a long pile of organic material managed as a worm bed. We’re adding food along one side, watching the worms gather, and learning as we go.

Right now, we’re building the worm population. Finished castings will come later!

Our latest blog shares the first four weeks, with photos and two short videos showing how we reverse the working side.

Have you tried an outdoor worm bed? We’d love to hear about it!

A simple pathway can make a growing garden easier to care for.

Our pathways give Robin room to move through the garden and work around the plants, while we develop individual planting areas gradually. There’s no need to finish every corner before enjoying the space.

Healthy planting areas start below the leaves.

In our backyard garden, compost adds organic matter, worm castings bring biology and nutrients, and arbor mulch covers and protects the soil. Each plays a different part as we prepare the ground for plants to settle in.

Before you dig 100 holes, let the garden tell you what it needs.

We’re watching where the sun and shade fall, which spots stay moist, and where the soil dries more quickly. That gives us clues about where plants may thrive—and which ones might need a new spot as the garden grows.
