CVDA played an integral role in the St. Mary Medical Center green roof project, from conceptual design and grant application assistance to consultant coordination. Working with Philadelphia-based civil engineering firm Roofscapes, Inc., our team addressed the engineering challenges of a lightweight roof system with just 3¾ inches of growing media.
Inspired by a weaverās loom, the design features bands of colorful sedums, recycled rubber tiles, and white pebbles to symbolize the connection between St. Mary Medical Center and the surrounding community. Careful plant selection ensures visual interest throughout the seasons, even when sedums are dormant.
Beyond its aesthetic value, the green roof helps reduce energy consumption and manage peak stormwater runoff. Though not accessible to visitors, it provides calming views for patients, medical staff, and visitors from nearby patient rooms, offices, and hallways.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can unite technical innovation, environmental performance, and a more restorative healthcare environment.
