Instead of flowers, let’s try something different. Pollinators.
Just look at this cute little bumblebee butt in my herbaceous geranium. Tried as might, this male wouldn’t give me the time of day and kept turning his back to me. Ah well. I think he’s just as handsome this way. Let’s see your pollinator photos!

Ever wonder what happens to the beautiful hanging flower baskets after they are removed in charming and picturesque downtown Edmonds?

Edmonds in Bloom coordinates with the Edmonds Department of Parks, Recreation and Human Services, yearly to do this. On September 16th 2026, there were volunteers from both organizations who depotted and took apart all 125 of them in only 30 minutes. The Parks Department hangs the pots, maintains them throughout the summer, removes the baskets in mid-September, and will mulch the plant material and soil to reuse it again.

Each year 8-10 volunteers are recruited to help with the depotting event. If you are interested in participating in this, Kids Plant in May, the Garden Tour in July, or in other ways, please contact us at Edmonds in Bloom!

Big shoutout to Dave Brengelmann of Richmond Beach for stopping by to photograph this year’s depotting for us. Thanks Dave!

Here’s a close-up of my Chinese lantern plant, also called a Japanese lantern or bladder cherry. Its papery, orange-red covering looks almost like a little lantern or a heart hanging from the stem.
The plant belongs to the genus Physalis, which also includes tomatillos and ground cherries.
