Community Forklift's consignment partnerships help local makers share their creativity with the reuse community while keeping usable materials in circulation. Take Saint Thomas Ventures, for example. Craftsman Brett Lamber gives old wh***ey barrels a new life as distinctive home and garden finds like oak barrel planters and hanging barrel-hoop sculptures.

When you walk the aisles at Community Forklift, do you ever think “that is definitely meant for the stage”? James Raymond, the set designer for KIPP DC Legacy College Preparatory in Southeast D.C., had that exact thought when he visited us to source props for their student production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Through our Community Building Blocks (CBB) program, we provided free materials for the production, including a vintage 1940s pistachio dental unit perfect for the infamous dentist scenes! These materials helped create an immersive, professional experience for these talented students.

But we can't support local creativity without you. As we approach the end of the year, your financial support helps us provide free materials to schools, shelters, and community groups. Every dollar helps turn discarded items into community opportunities.

Welcome to BoxTown: a city built with salvaged cardboard and imagination!

At the National Building Museum’s Big Build event this past weekend, Community Forklift worked with builders of all ages to create a whole city out of cardboard boxes and simple craft materials. Just look at those towers!

Throughout the day, kids and adults added their creations to our city map. As BoxTown grew, we took apart some buildings in sections so other builders could reuse the materials. It was a fun way to show how building materials can find new life through reuse, just like the materials Community Forklift helps keep in circulation throughout the DMV.

Thank you very much to the National Building Museum and their wonderful volunteers for making us feel so welcome, and to everyone who stopped by to build with us!

Salvaged lumber and lighting help set the stage for a spooky fall production!

Community Forklift's Community Building Blocks (CBB) program provided free salvaged materials for the set of the Washington Stage Guild‘s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a one-actor retelling of Washington Irving's classic tale.

Founded in 1986, Washington Stage Guild produces thought-provoking plays from around the world for DC-area audiences. In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, audiences follow overconfident schoolmaster Ichabod Crane into an abandoned tavern and toward a fateful encounter with the Headless Horseman. This spooky, funny production runs through this Sunday, October 18.

Salvaged materials help local organizations create art, bring people together, and make cultural experiences more accessible! Learn more about the show and get tickets at https://stageguild.org/legend-of-sleepy-hollow/
