Today marks 10 years of Ron Elliott Studio. A whole decade of getting to do what I love. 

I put together a map with nearly every project I've done and it made me realize how far I've come, and just how much road there is behind me. It wouldn't have been possible without my clients, collaborators, contractors, colleagues, and community. It's hard to put into words my appreciation, but thank you for supporting my small business and my family.

There are people who I wish were here to celebrate this with me, people who helped me get here, and people who are the only reason I'm here, but I'll keep putting dots on the map for as long as I can and I'm hoping there are more ahead.

Today's office. Measuring a historic home in the Encanto Palmcroft Neighborhood that will be receiving a remodel and a new detached accessory dwelling unit.

I've had people ask me why I still measure with a tape and laser, and why I don't just scan the house using GPS or 3D imaging and lidar. While using one of these systems may be faster, that doesn't make it better. My time on site measuring has another purpose. It let's me get to know the house and the people who live there (and their pets too). It's part of my process, and gives me a deeper understanding of the context that I will be working within. I decide exactly what I am measuring and how it is captured and recorded, choosing what is important and how it will be displayed. Faster isn't always better.

The Foothills Residence in Paradise Valley has some of the most amazing views looking out over the valley and across to the mountains. This hillside home was originally designed by Domenic Berta for Erma Bombeck, a well known humor author of the 70's 80's and 90's. The home wasn't taking full advantage of the available views with wide columns and relatively small doors obstructing the view. We added larger beams removing unnecessary columns and significantly reducing the size of the remaining ones to better enjoy the panoramic views. Phase 2 of this project will be coming soon.

The Foothills Residence in Paradise Valley has some of the most amazing views looking out over the valley and across to the mountains. My mother passed on to the other side last night. She is so much of who I am. She loved me with everything she had and believed in me and made me believe in myself and that I could do anything. 

Her life long ailments had grown to a point that she could no longer endure. She had lost the ability to walk after her stroke just over four years ago, and in the last several months she had slowly lost her appetite. Over the next three months she was in the hospital, a rehabilitation facility nearby, and finally hospice care at home.

We all know that we don't get to stay here forever, but it's so hard to believe that it is really happening when the time comes for a loved one to leave. I thought that this was some kind of problem that I could solve, something that I could fix. I wanted so badly to make her better, and we did everything we could to help her, but it was never going to be enough. My heart aches.

This is my business page, but I share this here because everything is personal to me, my work, the projects, the relationships, it is all an extension of myself and I need anyone reading this to know that, and I want you to know what an amazing woman my mother is. 

We love you so much Mom. I'm sorry for all the pain you had to endure. Thank you for everything you did for us. You loved us with your whole heart. I know you're in a better place now, a place with no pain where you can watch over us with all of our loved ones on the other side.
