Busy Friday here at Erda Sod! Maybe everyone is trying to get their yards in before Hurricane Rachel hits this weekend? 🤔 looks like things will cool off after the storm. Conditions are still looking great for laying Sod this fall! As you can see, we have plenty available until winter eventually arrives.

The most asked question I'm getting right now- "is it too late to lay sod?" The answer is, no! Fall is the best time of year to lay sod! Especially this year. The soil temperature is very warm coming off a record hot summer. As you can see, when I plant new grass on the farm, the seeds germinate in about 5 days. It usually takes around 10-14 days this time of year. Because of the warm soil temps, they sprout quick! Sod will root down fast as well and grow deep, getting a great head start before next summer. Since the days are shorter and the sun angle is less direct, moisture stays in the ground longer so it takes much less water to get sod started as well.

Before and after of a recent landscape refresh on a older yard! Fall is THE best time to lay sod. The sun angle is less direct, the days are a little shorter, it cools off at night, making it easier to keep watered. Plus there is lots of time for the roots to grow deep before next summer. We typically harvest late into November depending on the weather. Call to schedule a delivery or pick up! 435-882-2890

This was the first Load of sod cut 30 years ago from our farm in Erda! I believe this went to our friends DarinTeresa Harris. 30 years later, it still looks beautiful! We started out using a slab cutter but soon went to a roll cutter. We still use rolls to this day! With rolls you can get more square footage per piece, they're easier to carry and lay out, and you can fit more per pallet. With a lack of airflow, The flat slabs tend to start heating up in the middle of the pallet in hot weather. When that happens, each peice of sod would have a half circle burned into it. Over the last three decades, we're constantly looking to improve everything we do!
