If you're looking for a native grass that brings both elegance and sensory appeal to a site, this is it. Prairie Dropseed forms a beautiful, fine-textured, fountain-like clump of bright green foliage that transitions to a stunning golden-orange in the fall.

But its most famous feature? The scent! In late summer, those delicate, open seed heads release a unique, captivating fragrance that many describe as a mix of coriander and freshly popped buttered popcorn. 🍿🌿Others describe it as soapy smelling or Cilantro-like.

Where is the best place to use it?
Because of its deep roots and incredible drought tolerance, it thrives in full sun and dry soils. It is spectacular when used in mass plantings, as a base matrix for a meadow design, or as a soft, sweeping border along paths and walkways.

Perfect Companion Plants:
Create a vibrant, pollinator-friendly ecosystem by pairing it with bold, structural natives like Purple Coneflower, Butterfly W**d, Rough Blazing Star, or Little Bluestem.

🌿 Plant Spotlight: Dotted Mint (Monarda punctata) 🌿
Looking for a show-stopper that will have your local pollinators buzzing? Look no further than Dotted Mint! 🐝✨
Also known as Spotted Horsemint, this native beauty is famous for its intricate, unique purple dotting along its pale, showy bracts. It’s a fantastic choice if you need a shorter perennial massing, typically topping out at a manageable 1 to 3 feet in height.
Why it's a prairie favorite:
• Pollinator Magnet: It is an absolute favorite for native bees!
• Late Season Color: Expect gorgeous, tiered blooms from mid-summer through early fall (July–September), providing crucial late-season forage.
• Great Companions: It pairs beautifully with other sun-loving, drought-tolerant natives. It mingles well with Purple Coneflower. It also looks incredible planted alongside Little Bluestem, Butterfly W**d, or Black-eyed Susan.
⚠️ A quick design note: While we adore Dotted Mint, it is a bit of a take-over artist. It thrives in dry, sandy soils and spreads readily by both seeds and runners. It is an incredible workhorse for large, naturalized areas, ecological restorations, and competitive prairie meadows, but use caution when introducing it to small, formal landscape beds where it might aggressively crowd out its neighbors.

Plant Spotlight: New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae) 🌸🐝

Looking to add vibrant late-season color to your landscape while supporting local wildlife? New England Aster is a show-stopping Midwest native that lights up gardens right when most other blooms are fading!

Pollinator Powerhouse: A vital late-season nectar source for monarch butterflies fueling up for migration, as well as native bees preparing for winter.

Fall Color: Explodes with rich purple blooms from September through October.

Height: Grows tall and lush, reaching 3' to 5' tall.

Site Conditions: Thrives in full sun to part sun and adapts easily across wet-mesic to dry-mesic soils.

Companion Plants: Pairs perfectly with late-blooming native prairie grasses (like Big Bluestem or Little Bluestem) and vibrant yellow Showy Goldenrod for a stunning, naturalized contrast.

Fun Fact: The flowers close up at night and on heavy, overcast days to protect their valuable pollen!

Bring late-fall magic and essential ecological value to your yard this season.

Question of the Day: Can I plant when it’s this hot out? 🥵
The short answer is: IYes, you absolutely can! But when summer temps are soaring, your new plants need a little extra TLC to make the transition.
To help your new green additions beat the heat, follow these three essential steps:
⬇️ 1. Keep 'Em Cool Before Planting
Don’t let your plants bake in their plastic pots while they wait to go into the ground. Store them in a cool, shady spot and make sure to keep the soil consistently moist.
⏰ 2. Timing is Everything
Avoid planting in the baking midday sun! Plan your planting for the cooler mornings or late evenings. This gives your plants a chance to settle in without the immediate stress of high heat and intense UV rays.
💧 3. Water Wisely (and deeply!)
New plants need 1" of water per week.
• The Schedule: Water every other day for the first week to help them establish.
• The Method: Slow, deep root watering at the base of the plant is best. This encourages roots to grow deep into the soil where it's cooler and wetter, rather than staying shallow near the hot surface.
