Brooks Tree Service

Brooks Tree Service Hi, my name is Melvin Brooks. I have run this tree service for 40 years plus I have my son Steven that has been working with me for 10 years.

In my spare time I like to watch my daughter and Grandson race stock cars. I enjoy living in Batesville area.

Most of us grew up hearing that the first cold snap is what turns the leaves. It makes sense. The color seems to show up right about when the mornings get cold.

But the Forest Service says the real trigger is the calendar. As the nights get longer, the trees start shutting down for winter and stop making the green chlorophyll in their leaves. The yellows and oranges were sitting under the green all summer long, and now they finally show.

The weather still gets a say in how good the show is. A run of warm, sunny days and cool nights that stay above freezing brings out the brightest reds.

So if the leaves on your road are turning during a warm spell this year, now you know why.

They think you cut trees...

They don't know about the calculations you run in your head before you put a guy on a rope.

The exact angle of the lean, the tie-in point, where the houses are, where the kids ride bikes, and whether the homeowner is the kind who'll wander into the drop zone if you don't lock the gate.

They don't know about the call you took at 11pm and you were the only outfit who'd answer the phone.

And they have no idea that the bid you walked away, the one your competitor took for less, was going to hurt somebody.

They think it's chainsaws.

You know what it actually is.

So does every owner in this country still running a real shop, doing real work, holding a real line.

There aren't that many of you.

Most of you don't know each other.

You should.

The other guys, you don't even count them.

They'll be gone in 2 storm seasons.

The standard you hold is the most expensive thing in your business...

Insurance.

Real training.

Great equipment.

Pay scales that keep your employees around.

Time off when a guy's wife is sick.

The bid you don't lowball because you can't run the job safely at that number.

It's also the most valuable thing you own.

And it's the one thing nobody at any business conference, any trade show, any marketing agency, any PE buyer's diligence call will ever know how to put a number on.

That's what The Backcut is about.

The Backcut is a free weekly newsletter for tree service owners who hold the line and give a rip about what they're building.

Operations. Growth. Succession.

The stuff nobody talks about at trade shows because it's too real.

(ok...maybe after the drinks are flowing)

Written for the ones who built something real and want to pass it on.

A single mature tree pumps about 100 gallons of water up through its roots and out through its leaves each day. That water evaporates off the leaf surface and carries heat with it—same physics as sweat cooling your skin. The air around the canopy drops measurably because of it.

A mature elm with 150,000 leaves can handle that transpiration in a day. The cooling effect is roughly equivalent to two household air conditioning units running all day. Except it runs on sunlight and groundwater, costs nothing, and has been doing it since before your house was built.

A yard with mature canopy runs 5 to 10 degrees cooler than a paved or treeless yard next door. That's not a feeling—it's a physics difference you can measure with a thermometer. The urban heat island gets worse one removed tree at a time.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.
