🌿💗 Who Says You Need Flowers to Have Gorgeous Color?

Let's talk about Hypoestes, better known as the Polka Dot Plant!

I'm excited to share that Redwood Roadside Bouquets will be carrying the Proven Winners HIPPO® series in spring 2027! 🌸

These beauties are grown for their colorful foliage, and we'll be offering three gorgeous varieties:

❤️ HIPPO® Red II – Rich red leaves splashed with green.

💕 HIPPO® Rose – Vibrant pink leaves with beautiful dark green markings.

🤍 HIPPO® White – Eye-catching white and green patterned foliage.

Unlike some of the smaller polka dot plants, these can grow approximately 16–22 inches tall, making them wonderful additions to containers, mixed planters, and garden beds.

🌿 A little growing advice: They appreciate well-draining soil, consistent moisture, and bright light. They tolerate some sun or shade, although protection from intense afternoon sun is helpful.

They're rated for Zones 10–11, so here on our Northern California coast in Zone 9b, they're generally grown as annuals because they aren't frost-hardy.

And take a look at my own pink polka dot plant in the photo! 💗 It's growing right here in my garden and is still going strong in the middle of October! That's one thing I love about gardening on our Northern California coast. Our mild fall weather can keep some of these colorful plants looking beautiful much longer than you might expect.

Here's a fun fact: Their beautiful colors come from their leaves, not their flowers! Pinching off their tiny blooms can help encourage fuller, bushier growth.

🌿 Let's Talk Begonias! Not All Begonias Are Created Equal! 🌸

Just look at the size of the leaves on this beauty! That's my hand in the picture to give you an idea of just how impressive they are!

I've been looking through my Proven Winners grower catalog for 2027, and there are some gorgeous foliage begonias worth talking about!

🌿 T-Rex™ Begonias: Known for their large, dramatic, textured leaves and incredible colors. These Rex-type begonias are grown primarily for their foliage rather than their flowers. They're wonderful statement plants for shady, protected locations.

🌿 Pegasus® Begonias: A different begonia series from T-Rex, known for its beautiful silvery-green foliage, interesting leaf patterns, and upright, mounding growth. Perfect for containers and shady patios.

🌿 Space Age® Begonias: An exciting series from Proven Winners featuring Black Hole, Europa, and Triton. These beauties have incredible leaf patterns, unusual colors, and gorgeous textures. They're definitely attention-getters!

🌸 Now, here's something interesting about growing them on our Northern California coast!

The Space Age series is listed as hardy in Zones 10–12, and we're in Zone 9b. But sometimes our mild coastal climate surprises us!

I've had my foliage begonias growing happily for two to three years, even through our winters! I've found that keeping them close to a building or in a pot next to a fence can provide just enough protection to help them through our cooler months. Both have worked well for me!

Of course, a really hard frost could be a different story, so I wouldn't call them reliably winter-hardy here. But with a little protection and a sheltered location, these beauties can sometimes last much longer than you might expect!

☀️ They prefer bright, indirect light or shade, well-draining soil, and protection from harsh sun and freezing temperatures.

I'm hoping to grow a few more of these gorgeous foliage begonias for sale at Redwood Roadside Bouquets in spring 2027!

Sometimes you don't need flowers to make a statement. The foliage steals the entire show! 💗🌿

Pretty packaging with 2 tubers per package, beautiful pictures of the blooms, and growing instructions. A little more expensive, but ready to go!

🌸 Another Project in the Works at Redwood Roadside Bouquets! 🌸

Our high tunnel is getting a makeover for spring 2027, and we're pretty excited about this one!

We're turning it into a beautiful walk-through shopping experience, where you'll be able to wander through and choose from rows of gorgeous hanging baskets and display tables lined with colorful flowering containers. 🌺

Our goal is to give everything plenty of room to grow big, full, and beautiful! With a fertilization program, we'll be keeping those hanging baskets and containers looking their very best, so you'll have a wonderful selection to choose from.

And yes, another project for Grant and me! At this point, I'm not sure which one of us comes up with more projects, but we sure make a good team! 😂🌸

More shopping space, more flowers, and another peaceful little place to enjoy while visiting Redwood Roadside Bouquets. 🌿

🌸🌿 It's like Christmas for a plant lover! 🌿🌸

Guess what arrived this week?! My 2027 Proven Winners Grower Resource Guide! 💚

If you know me, you know I am a HUGE Proven Winners fan! And this is one of my favorite times of the year—planning, researching, and deciding what gorgeous plants we'll be growing for the upcoming season!

One of the things I'm most proud of is that Redwood Roadside Bouquets is a Proven Winners retail grower! 🌺

What does that mean for our little community? It means we have the opportunity to grow and offer some of the most beautiful, reliable, and high-performing plants available, right here in Del Norte County!

In my opinion, Proven Winners is the BEST in the business. Their plants are tried, tested, and selected for their outstanding performance, and that's exactly what I want to offer our customers.

There's something pretty special about bringing this level of quality to our small community without having to travel out of the area to find it. 💚

So while the gardens may be winding down for the year, the planning for 2027 is just heating up! 🌸

And I'd love to hear from YOU! Are there any Proven Winners plants on your wish list? Any favorites you'd like to see us grow or something new you're excited about? Your suggestions help me plan our growing numbers so we can have more of what our customers are looking for!

Another project checked off the list at Redwood Roadside Bouquets! 🌸🌿

Our new garden arbor is officially finished! We still need to add the sign, but that can wait until spring.

I can already picture the beautiful flowers growing on each side, and I can't wait to get everything planted and watch it all come together next spring! 🌷
