🌳 What Is Your Tree Trying to Tell You? Common Tree Problems Central Indiana Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore
Many tree problems develop slowly, and homeowners often don’t realize there is an issue until a large limb falls, a storm causes damage, or the tree begins declining rapidly.
As we move toward fall in Central Indiana, now is a good time to walk your property and look for warning signs such as:
✅ Dead or leafless branches – Deadwood can become brittle and fall without much warning.
✅ Cracks or splits in the trunk or major limbs – These can indicate structural weakness, especially in trees with multiple large stems.
✅ Large branches hanging over your home – Healthy limbs still need proper clearance and weight distribution, while compromised limbs may present a greater concern.
✅ Mushrooms, cavities, or decay near the trunk or roots – These can sometimes indicate internal decay or root-system problems.
✅ A tree suddenly leaning or the soil lifting around its base – Changes around the root plate can be especially concerning and should be evaluated promptly.
✅ Storm-damaged or hanging limbs – Broken branches can remain suspended in the canopy long after a storm has passed.
✅ Repeatedly dropping large branches – Frequent limb drop is something homeowners should take seriously, especially near homes, driveways, play areas, or neighboring property.
🌳 Does every problem mean the tree needs removed?
No. Depending on the tree and its condition, the right solution may be deadwood removal, selective pruning, canopy reduction, roof clearance, storm-damage cleanup, or continued monitoring. When a tree has severe structural defects, extensive decay, or significant decline, full removal may be the safer long-term recommendation.
We also want homeowners to know that routine heavy pruning is not something we encourage simply because a tree looks overgrown this time of year. For many trees in Central Indiana, we prefer to schedule normal pruning during the dormant season, generally late November through January, while addressing immediate hazards when necessary.
