Here's something I genuinely love about living in the Triangle. 🎄

We get real seasons. Not the "maybe it'll feel like December" kind, actual crisp air, colored leaves still on the trees, and neighborhoods that go all out for the holidays.

Heritage, Bedford, Falls River, drive through any of them in December and it feels like a holiday card came to life.

One thing to know if you're hanging lights this year: check your strand box for the maximum number you can connect end to end. Don't go past it. Overloaded runs trip breakers and can overheat plugs, not what you want on a cold December night.

There was a house in my neighborhood growing up that we had to no drive past every December. 🎄

You know the one. Every kid in a five-mile radius knew it. Roofline lit up, trees wrapped from trunk to tip, the whole yard glowing.

My dad would slow the car down without anyone asking. Nobody said a word. We just looked.

I think about that house a lot now. Somebody spent real time on that. And they probably had no idea how many families made it part of their December.

A lot of folks around Wake Forest and Heritage grew up with a house like that in their neighborhood.

Happy DIY Tips Wednesday, friends! 🎄

Quick answer: If you're still running old incandescent C9 strands on your roofline, it's worth switching to LEDs before you hang a single clip this year.

Here's why. Incandescent bulbs run hot and pull a lot of current. LED C9s run cool and put far less load on your outdoor circuit. That matters a lot when you've got multiple strands daisy-chained across a roofline in Heritage or Bedford.

Less heat means less risk. Less load means you're not tripping breakers at 6pm on Christmas Eve.

A couple other things worth knowing before you climb up there, use clips made for your specific roof type, and make sure your outdoor outlets have GFCI protection. Most homes around North Raleigh already do, but it's worth a quick check.

I've been thinking a lot about Heritage lately. Something about that neighborhood just feels like it was made for Christmas lights, the rooflines, the mature trees, the long driveways. It's the kind of street where one house goes up and the whole block follows.

Here's a real safety reminder before anyone starts pulling bins out of the attic this week: if a breaker trips or a strand feels warm to the touch, unplug it and figure out why before plugging it back in. Warm strands are telling you something. It's worth listening.

Happy Saturday, Triangle! 🎄

Okay, real talk. We were just thinking about the yearly ritual that happens in neighborhoods like Heritage and Bedford every single November, someone drags a giant bin out of the garage, pulls out the first strand of lights, and immediately hits the wall. One strand. Won't. Work.

You test the fuses. You swap the bulbs. You hold it up to the light like it owes you money. And somewhere around the 45 minute mark, your spouse quietly suggests just buying new lights.

We've been there. Every lighting person has been there.

It's basically a Triangle holiday tradition at this point. 😄

Here's the move, by the way, keep a small bin of spare bulbs and fuses on hand. Saves a trip to Lowe's the first time a strand goes dark, which WILL happen.

It's DIY Tips Wednesday, and here's one that took me way too long to figure out on my own, if you've got cord runs along your porch railing or steps, skip the zip ties.

Use clear outdoor-rated tape instead.

Zip ties crack and snap in the cold, and they can leave marks on painted wood. Clear outdoor tape holds better through temperature swings, looks almost invisible from the street, and won't damage your railing finish when you pull it down in January.

You can knock this out in under an hour and the difference in how clean your lights look from the curb is genuinely surprising.

Small thing. Big visual impact.

We finished up a house in Bedford at Falls River yesterday evening, and I'll be honest, moments like that are why we do this.

The homeowner had never had professional lights before. Standard brick colonial, nice landscaping, good curb appeal. But at night? It just kind of disappeared into the dark like most houses do in October.

We ran warm white C9s along the full roofline and front ridge, wrapped the two oak trees flanking the driveway, and lit the columns. Nothing over the top, just clean and intentional.

When the husband pulled into the driveway after work and saw it for the first time, he sat in his truck for a second before getting out. His wife texted us later and said he hadn't stopped talking about it.

If you're in the Wake Forest or Heritage area this weekend, the North Wake Farmers Market on White Street is wrapping up its fall season, and it is genuinely one of those small-town Saturday morning experiences worth the drive. Local vendors, fresh apple c***r, pumpkins stacked high. It feels like October is supposed to feel.

We've been noticing more and more neighborhoods around Heritage and Bedford already starting to “think”holiday,people asking us about roofline colors, whether to do warm white or multicolor this year.

(Honest opinion: multicolor is underrated. It brings back that childhood magic in a way warm white just can't touch.)

There's a moment we see every single season that never gets old. 🎄

A family comes outside, usually the kids first, and they see their home lit up for the first time. Not clip-on big-box lights. “Their” home, professionally done, roofline to ridge, glowing warm white or whatever color they picked out weeks earlier.

We did a home over in Bedford last year. Dad was trying to play it cool. His daughter, maybe seven years old, grabbed his hand and just stood there in the driveway not saying anything.

That silence said everything.

Nothing beats driving around looking at Christmas lights with family. But having “your house” be that house? That's something different.
