Tree work doesn’t stop when the leaves fall.

Late fall and winter are busy times for our crew, especially when it comes to tree removal. If a tree has already been evaluated and removal is the right call, there’s no need to wait for spring to get it on the schedule.

Every removal is different. Some are straightforward, while others require climbing, specialized equipment, and a carefully planned approach to protect the home and surrounding property.

A big pile of mulch around the base of a tree might look tidy, but more mulch isn’t always better.

Over time, excess soil and mulch can build up around the trunk and bury the root flare. That can trap moisture against the trunk, reduce oxygen exchange, and hide root problems below the surface.

When we’re working around a tree’s root system, part of the process may include correcting the grade and resetting the mulch so the root flare stays exposed and the mulch is at an appropriate depth.

It’s a small detail that can make a big difference in the growing conditions around the base of a tree.

And yes, soil work can still be done into the fall as long as the ground isn’t frozen.

Every fall, we get questions about trees changing color or dropping leaves earlier than others in the neighborhood.

The good news is that it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.

Different species change color and lose their leaves on different schedules, and weather throughout the growing season can affect the timing too.

What gets our attention is when there are other changes along with it, like dead branches, significant thinning in the canopy, or unusual discoloration.

As the leaves start coming down, we get a much better look at what’s happening within a tree’s canopy.

Fall and winter can be a great time for pruning because the branch structure is easier to see. Depending on the tree, pruning may be recommended to remove dead or damaged branches, address crossing or poorly attached limbs, or improve the tree’s overall structure.

That doesn’t mean every tree needs to be pruned every year. Our arborists look at the tree, its structure, and the surrounding property before recommending any work.

What you see in the canopy doesn't always tell the whole story.

Compacted soil, buried root flares, and root defects can cause problems below ground long before there are obvious changes above it.

That's where Root System Restoration (RSR) comes in.

Using specialized compressed air, our arborists can carefully expose the root flare and inspect what's happening below the soil. Depending on what we find, RSR may include correcting certain root defects, relieving soil compaction, root-zone aeration, incorporating compost and biostimulants, resetting mulch, and watering.

It's specialized work that most homeowners never see, but it can give us another option when we're trying to preserve a tree rather than remove it.

Summer storms, heat, and dry weather can all take a toll on trees.

As we head into fall, it's a good time to have your trees evaluated, especially if you've noticed dead limbs, cracked branches, or changes in the canopy.

A professional inspection can help identify concerns early and give you a better idea of what, if anything, should be addressed before winter.

Most people think tree care is all about pruning or removal, but that's not always the case.

For some mature trees, a growth regulator like Cambistat can be a valuable tool. It works by slowing excessive top growth and redirecting energy toward the root system, helping trees better handle drought, environmental stress, and the challenges of growing in urban landscapes.

Every tree is different, which is why we don't recommend the same treatment for every property. During an evaluation, our certified arborists can determine whether a growth regulator is the right fit based on the tree's species, condition, and growing environment.

Sometimes the best way to care for a tree isn't cutting branches. It's giving the tree the support it needs to thrive for years to come.
