✨ Discover the Beauty of Imperfection: Kintsugi Workshop ✨

What if something broken could become even more beautiful than before? Join us at Shinzen Friendship Garden for a special Kintsugi Workshop and explore the Japanese art of embracing imperfections.

🌸 What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi, meaning “golden joinery,” is the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and powdered gold. Rather than hiding cracks, Kintsugi celebrates them, transforming imperfections into something beautiful and unique. It's a powerful reminder that our experiences, including our challenges, are part of what makes us who we are. Register on our website.

Beautiful gardens don't happen by accident. 🌿

From carefully pruning trees to removing leaves, tending plants and keeping pathways beautiful, our volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year caring for Shinzen.

Many of the people you see working in the Garden have been volunteering with us week after week, year after year.

The next time you visit and see one of our volunteers at work, give them a wave—or a thank you. 💚

They are an important part of what makes Shinzen special.

Not every leaf needs to be perfect. Not every tree needs to be symmetrical.

Japanese gardens often embrace wabi-sabi - an appreciation for impermanence, simplicity and the beauty found in things that change with time.

Autumn captures this beautifully.

Leaves change color. They fall. Branches become visible. The Garden transforms.

Instead of hiding those changes, the landscape invites us to notice them. 🍂

Behind every beautiful corner of Shinzen is a community of people who care deeply about this Garden.

Today, we’re celebrating our incredible Wednesday Volunteers. Week after week, this dedicated group gives their time and talents to pruning, planting, cleaning, maintaining pathways and caring for the landscape.

Their work often happens quietly—but you can see the results everywhere you look.

To our Wednesday crew: thank you for helping Shinzen grow. 💚

Did you know?

In Japanese culture, appreciating autumn leaves is known as Momijigari (紅葉狩り), often translated as “red leaf hunting.”

Much like cherry blossom viewing in spring, people visit gardens, parks and mountains to enjoy the brilliant reds, oranges and golds of the changing leaves.

Soon, Shinzen’s Japanese maples will be putting on their own autumn show. 🍁

Plan a visit and watch the Garden transform week by week.
