Thinking of Buying UGU Seedlings This Winter? READ THIS FIRST! ⚠️

Before you spend your hard-earned money on ugu seedlings this time of year (fall/winter), please consider your growing conditions.

Remember, ugu (fluted pumpkin) is a tropical plant that loves warmth. It does not tolerate freezing temperatures, and cold weather significantly slows its growth.

Yes, you can grow ugu during winter, but ONLY if you can provide the right growing conditions, including adequate warmth and light. And remember, even an unheated greenhouse may not provide enough protection during a freeze.

Just because someone is selling seedlings doesn’t mean it’s the right planting season for you.

If you don’t have the right conditions to keep your plants growing through winter, my advice is simple: save your money and wait until spring.

I’m sharing this because I want you to succeed. Gardening is already challenging enough without setting ourselves up for disappointment.

Know your growing zone. Understand your growing season. Garden wisely! 👂

My people, a follower recently asked where I buy my ghost pepper seeds.

I shared my usual source for ghost peppers (Pepper Joe’s), but another follower raised concerns about seed reliability and receiving peppers that weren’t true to type.

That got me curious, so I did a little research to explore other options.

Here are five seed suppliers worth checking out:

1. Sandia Seed Company
2. Pepper Joe’s
3. Atomic Pepper Seeds
4. New Mexico Chile Pepper Institute
5. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

These suppliers offer ghost pepper (Bhut Jolokia) seeds, including varieties such as red, peach, yellow, and chocolate.

A quick note: I haven’t personally tested all six suppliers, and customer experiences vary. When buying pepper seeds, germination is important, but getting the correct variety matters just as much!

Now, over to you!

Have you purchased ghost pepper seeds from any of these suppliers? How was your experience? Or is there another reliable source you would recommend?

Let’s learn from one another!

HOW TO OVERWINTER UGU (FLUTED PUMPKIN): STEP-BY-STEP

My people, ugu doesn’t tolerate freezing temperatures. I borrowed this idea from how peppers are overwintered, tried it on my ugu, and it worked! Here’s exactly what I did.

1. Cut back the vine: Before the first freeze, cut the vine about 6–12 inches above ground level.

2. Dig it up: Carefully dig around the plant, keeping as much of the root system intact as possible. Gently shake off the soil and rinse the roots with clean water to reduce the chances of bringing pests indoors.

3. Prepare your container: Use a small container with drainage holes. Here’s how I layered mine:

* Piece of paper bag at the bottom, without blocking drainage
* Thin layer of play sand
* Potting mix
* Place the prepared ugu vine inside
* Add more potting mix, then sand, then potting mix
* Water lightly and finish with a layer of sand.

What’s play sand? It’s washed, screened sand commonly used in children’s sandboxes. You can find it at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or other home improvement stores.

The sand helps discourage fungus gnats and reduce pest problems indoors.

4. Move indoors: Store in a cool, frost-free location such as a garage, basement, or another protected space. I discussed 40–60°F in my video, but for tropical ugu, I recommend staying toward the warmer end of that range.

5. Winter care: Water sparingly, allowing the potting mix to dry somewhat between waterings, but don’t let the roots dry out completely. No fertilizer or grow lights needed for this resting method.

6. Come spring: Gradually introduce light and increase watering. Resume feeding when new growth appears. Harden off the plant before transplanting outdoors once the danger of frost has passed.

✅ REMEMBER: We’re NOT trying to grow ugu indoors during winter. We’re simply trying to keep the plant alive until the next growing season!

This is the method I personally tried, and it worked for me.
