🌺 Roselle Harvest Day at Little Flower Farm! 🌺
Today we harvested one of our favorite warm-season crops: Roselle Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa). This beautiful tropical plant is grown around the world for its bright red calyces, which are packed with flavor and have been used for centuries in foods, teas, jams, syrups, sauces, and traditional beverages.
Roselle has a fascinating history, with roots tracing back to Africa before spreading throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Depending on where you are in the world, you may know it as roselle, sorrel, Florida cranberry, or Jamaican hibiscus.
Here in North Central Florida, roselle thrives in our long, hot summers. Plants are typically grown from spring through fall and begin producing their harvestable calyces as the days shorten. Harvest time usually arrives in late fall, though maybe it has come early for us now in 2026? The bright red calyces are picked after the flowers drop and can be used fresh or dried for later use.
One of the most popular ways to enjoy roselle is as a deep ruby-red tea with a tart, cranberry-like flavor. It's equally delicious in jellies, jams, sauces, and refreshing summer drinks.
We're always amazed by how productive and beautiful these plants are. From their creamy yellow flowers to their brilliant red harvest, roselle is truly one of the stars of the fall garden. ❤️🌺
