A hollow trunk does not automatically mean a tree needs to be removed.
In Londonderry, NH, the visible cavity is only one part of the assessment. What matters is how much sound wood remains, whether the tree has developed cracks, how stable the roots are, how the crown is loading the trunk, and what could be damaged if part of the tree fails.
A tree can still have a green canopy while internal decay affects its structure. The opposite is also true: seeing a hollow section does not prove the tree is unsafe.
Some warning signs deserve faster attention, especially when they appear together with a cavity:
• Fresh or expanding cracks
• A new lean
• Soil lifting around the roots
• Fungal growth on the trunk or root flare
• Major broken limbs
• Dieback in the canopy
• Structural defects over a house, driveway, or walkway
Depending on the condition of the tree, the recommendation may be monitoring, professional tree trimming, another form of tree care, or removal.
