Embrace the plants and trees that enjoy living here! 🌱

I'm standing under the canopy of one of my favorite trees. It's a screw bean mesquite about twenty years old, but with that shaggy bark hanging off it, it looks like it's two hundred. That's the kind of magic you only get from a tree that actually belongs to this place.

It's one of our native mesquites, along with the honey mesquite. The velvet mesquite is North American too. There are some South American mesquites out there, but all in all, I think the North American ones are better suited for life here in Southern Nevada. They evolved with our soils, our heat, and — most importantly — our water. This particular tree gets watered about five or seven times a year. That's it.

Which brings me to the first thing I want you to know about desert trees: the right tree in the right yard is the whole game.

Happy to hear that Kingman is putting in a native plant walk! 🌱

Kingman Main Street has been awarded a grant from the Route 66 Association of Arizona to fund a Native Plant Walk and Ethnobotanical Corridor!!!

This project has the capacity to completely transform the landscaping between the Route 66 Arch and the Train Station into a water-wise, educational garden and wildflower corridor!

The Planning & Support Stage-

We are currently building community partnerships and garnering support before attending the City Council meeting to seek approval to plant along the public right-of-way.

We believe our local leaders will embrace this vision when we show up together as a community ready to partner, volunteer, and maintain this space. 💚

How to Get Involved-

If you love this idea, join us in bringing this positive proposal to the Council:

"Friends of Downtown" Gathering: May 27th | 6:30 PM | The Cellar Door. See the design and learn simple ways to help build this partnership and get involved.

City Council Meeting: June 2nd | 5:00 PM | City Council Chambers. Join us to share with Council that our community is invested and ready to help!

Let’s work together to grow a more sustainable and beautiful future for our little stretch of Route 66!

*📸 Conceptual rendering to help visualize the design. Only real & local humans will be designing and planting this dream 🫶🏼 *
