I know how my family feels in this economy and I can only imagine how others, in situations much tougher than mine, are feeling. It’s been a while since I’ve been genuinely excited about a candidate, but Abdul El-Sayed has me excited to cast my vote on November 3rd. El-Sayed is a smart, thoughtful person, who understands and cares about what ALL Michiganders are going through. His policies aim to reduce costs for everyday Americans, by lowering prescription drug prices, stopping cuts to Medicare and the Affordable Care Act, ending the Iran war and getting money out of politics, so that our politicians can get back to working for us and not for corporations and billionaires.

Make a plan to mail in your ballot, vote early or I’ll see you at the polls on November

It shouldn’t be this hard. I have had a side hustle for my entire career. I would like to just work a normal full-time job and feel like I’m not falling behind.

This feels very vulnerable to post, but I know it’s relatable. I personally know many women who do multiple jobs or hustle to the point of burn out to stay ahead. The more I learn about the system, the less guilt and shame I feel for not being able to advance in the game.

Trust me, I know I’m a lucky, privileged person and I still feel like this. I have empathy for all who know and feel a deeper struggle.

The chair! I bought a fantastic suede sling chair off marketplace early in the pandemic. It was fabulous, but a little worse for the wear, then we got a puppy and she dug the hole in the cushion even deeper. I bought a new marketplace chair, but I missed how open and light this chair was in the space. It took me the better part of the year to decide and then save up for the fabric, even a DIY project with trade discount this wasn’t an inexpensive project, fabric adds up fast! I love how fun and funky this turned out! I made a goal to add whimsy and color to our living room and this piece really does that!!

My oldest made it a goal to earn $1000 this year. He’s not quite old enough to mow lawns, so my coworker gave me the idea to offer to clean out the trash bins around the neighborhood. The only problem was that the power washer I bought off marketplace last summer was cumbersome and not up to s***f. I was so excited when I learned about this Kobalt Tools battery operated power washer from Lowe's Home Improvement that attaches directly to your hose. It is so easy to use directly out of the box. No plug, no giant tank, just one easy to use tool! Next up, coming up with a great marketing flyer to sell his services to the neighbors!

I wasn’t planning to refresh our basement this year…But then our puppy ruined the carpet. It ended up being the push I needed.

I updated this room back in 2019 to give my boys a great playroom. Now they are older. There are still toys, but there are also friend hangs, puzzles and video games. Instead of a full renovation, I’m giving this space a refresh that works for the season we’re in now.

If you’re wondering why this project seems to be taking so long, it’s because I’m a working mom fitting updating my home I to the margins. But that’s the thing about starting and chipping away consistently. It will get done.

A little reintroduction.

Every time I think about what I want this space to be I come back to encouraging people (women) to live a creative life, by tackling DIY home projects that feel big and scary, by dusting off their sewing machine or by creating a maker community.

I hope you can come here and feel inspired, rather than intimidated to tackle your projects. I’m just a regular mom, with very limited time, and a budget way too small to hire a professional, trying to fit it all in, build a space I love to raise my boys and create a community to share it all with.

If you’ve been waiting until you feel ready, consider this your permission slip.

Is your thermostat from the 1900s? Mine definitely was until I upgraded to a . I was able to install it in about an hour with no HVAC professional required. I also added smart sensors to our bedrooms, so we are not heating or cooling rooms that are unoccupied, keeping it comfortable and energy efficient. Lux Thermostat can be paired with your smart home device, but if you are one of the last hold outs, like me, an additional app or device is not required. I am so glad I brought this detail of my home into this century.

This is a sign to take yourself on a solo art date, and no better time than Third Thursdays. Did you know that the third Thursday of every month there are deals, happenings, street musicians and more down town Grand Rapids. Last month I stopped into to view some amazing student work, before strolling down to , where they are open late and have free admission. My only regret was not ending my evening at .

I am the absolute luckiest to be the center of the universe for these three little people.

I am the one they fight over to put them to bed. I am the the person they run to when they get hurt or when they do something great. I am the person they are most excited to share their art work with and the one to hear about the kid at school who called them a name. I am it.

Motherhood is hard and tiring and fun and inspiring. It is so many things. And it is the honor of my life being their mom.

Thank you for this snapshot of my mothering.

Happy Mother’s Day! May all the mothers be celebrated for the gravity they hold being the center of someone’s universe.
