Four bathrooms worth lingering in.

Bookmatched marble, a carved stone tub and one tall window left to do the rest.

01 Color, tile by tile. Deep green zellige is glazed by hand, so no two tiles catch the light the same way. Brushed brass and a teak bench warm the green.

02 The powder room. The smallest room in the house can take the boldest idea: a painted botanical mural, a carved stone pedestal sink and two pleated sconces.

03 Quiet materials. A floating oak vanity, an integrated limestone top and softly backlit mirrors make the room feel calm before you notice why.

A bathroom is the first room of the day and the last. It deserves the same care in materials, light and proportion as any room you entertain in.

One room, four moods.

The vaulted plaster, the travertine table and the oak floor stay exactly as they are. Only the upholstery and the art change, and the room reads as a different home each time.

01 Ivory. Boucle, travertine and oak.

02 Persimmon. Burnt orange velvet with olive accents.

03 Mallard. Emerald velvet with chestnut.

04 Blueberry. Indigo velvet with powder blue.

When the architecture is quiet, a single palette decision can change the whole room.

W**e, displayed rather than stored.

A glass-enclosed room with bottles lit from behind turns a collection into the focal point of the dining room. Walnut paneling and a dark stone floor keep the glow contained and warm.

The beauty depends on what you cannot see. A display like this needs dedicated cooling, a properly sealed enclosure and lighting that does not warm the bottles, all planned from the start.

Five layers of light.

01 Toe-kick light. A low line of light that lets the island float.

02 Under-cabinet light. Task light exactly where the counter is used.

03 Ceiling cove. Soft, indirect light that lifts the ceiling.

04 Linear pendant. Focused light over the island.

05 Backlit onyx. The stone itself becomes the light, and the focal point of the room.

Layered light gives a kitchen depth. With each layer on its own control, the same room can be bright for cooking and low and warm for the evening.

Lighting like this is planned with the electrical layout, long before cabinetry and stone are ordered.

Four kitchens, four points of view.

Each one is led by a single decision, and every other finish follows it. On the cover, burgundy-veined marble carries the room while cream cabinetry and aged brass stay quiet around it.

01 Living brass. An unlacquered brass hood darkens naturally with use. Against sage cabinetry and ivory zellige, it only gets better with age.

02 Three materials. Plaster, oak and travertine. Integrated appliances and no visible hardware keep the lines uninterrupted, so the fluted island becomes the focal point.

03 After dark. Fluted walnut, a monolithic island in leathered black granite and warm light set low under the cabinetry. A kitchen designed for the evening.

Choose one material to lead, and let the rest follow.

Which kitchen is yours: marble, brass, travertine or walnut?

Nature had the palette first.

Some of the most convincing color combinations were never invented. They were found. Six of them, and the rooms they could become.

01 Persimmon. Burnt orange velvet against olive-green paneling, grounded by ivory travertine.

02 Mallard. Emerald lacquer, chestnut leather and a dove-gray rug.

03 Canyon. Terracotta plaster, rose clay and pale sandstone, with one beam of light.

04 Blueberry. Indigo velvet, powder-blue linen and a whisper of silver sage.

05 Snowy owl. Snow white and charcoal, with amber glass as the only warm note.

06 Aspen. Butter-gold boucle, chalk-white walls and sky-blue linen at the windows.

The best palettes are already outside. The work is choosing which three colors to bring in, and where each one belongs in the room.

Which one would you live with? Tell me the number in the comments.

Design for the hour you are actually home.

Most rooms are chosen under bright midday light and lived in at the end of the day. A paint color that looks right at noon can turn flat or cold by evening.

Look at samples in the room itself, at the hour you use it most. Linen that glows when the sun is low and plaster that softens as the light drops. Plan for that hour and the room rewards you every day.

A white room is not automatically a cold one.

White turns warm when something gives it temperature: texture, a little color and one strong dark note.

01 Texture. A heavily textured sectional, upholstered swivel chairs and a fire set into the wall keep a pale room from reading as clinical.

02 A quiet working wall. Flat white gloss doors, with the ovens and refrigeration grouped in one tall run, keep the kitchen calm beside the dining table.

03 Black as punctuation. A black pendant over the table anchors the dining area and makes every white surface around it look brighter.

White is a backdrop. What you set against it decides the mood.

One color, used three times.

Saffron at the lamps, the seat cushions and the flowers. Repeated, a single color reads as a decision rather than an accent, and a white room gains warmth without losing its calm.

If you could bring one color into an all-white room, what would it be?

Every room begins as a plan.

Long before a single sample arrives, the layout decides where people will sit, gather and move. Everything that follows is built on that frame.

01 The layout comes before the look. How the room will be used and where the light falls set the frame that every later choice works within.

02 One palette. Stone, oak, linen and brass, chosen together on a single board, so you can see at once whether they belong to the same room.

03 From the floor up. Flooring, then the rug, then the upholstery, then lighting and art. Each layer is chosen in relation to the one beneath it.

A beautiful room is built in layers, not all at once.
