Wildflower seeds are here. PLANT NOW for spring color.

Turn a sunny border, orchard edge, or open patch of garden into a season of flowers. Fall is a valuable sowing window in mild-winter gardens, when cooler conditions and seasonal moisture can help suitable wildflowers establish.

Explore California native mixes, pollinator favorites, and fragrant flowers to match the garden you want to grow. Choose a mix suited to your region, sun, and watering plans.

Give your seeds a good start: clear existing w**ds, follow the package’s planting depth and coverage directions, and create good seed-to-soil contact. Water as needed when rainfall is insufficient. In colder climates, follow the variety’s dormant-sowing or spring-planting guidance.

Windsor Fava Beans: More Than a Cover Crop 🌱

An open cool-season bed can grow a future bean harvest or a crop that helps build your soil. Windsor fava beans produce large edible beans, along with sturdy upright growth and substantial roots.

For the garden: Established plants cover exposed soil and compete with cool-season w**ds. Used as green manure, their foliage and stems contribute organic matter as they break down. A compatible legume inoculant helps support nitrogen fixation.

For the kitchen: Let pods develop until they are full and green, then harvest the beans for cooking. Harvest timing varies with the weather, often around 80–100 days after planting.

Plant in fall where winters are mild, or in early spring in colder climates. For a bean harvest, sow 1–2 inches deep, space seeds 6–8 inches apart, and leave 18–24 inches between rows. Keep moisture consistent during flowering and pod development.

If soil building is your goal, cut the crop before mature seed develops and give the residue time to decompose before planting the next crop.

Enjoy ripe halves with soft cheese, slice them onto a summer fruit plate, or savor them straight from the tree.

This late-ripening variety thrives with long, warm summers, full sun, and well-drained soil. It’s self-fruitful, so you only need one tree to grow your own striped harvest.

How Daikon Improves Your Soil This Fall 🌱

Daikon means “big root” in Japanese—and that substantial taproot explains why gardeners grow it as a cover crop. During active fall growth, this fast-growing radish puts open beds to work above and below ground.

🌱 Root growth: Its taproot pushes into dense soil and can help relieve compaction. Moist soil supports this natural “biodrilling.”

💧 Nutrient capture: Growing roots take up residual nitrogen and hold it in the plant’s leaves and fleshy root, helping reduce losses during wet weather.

🍃 W**d competition: Broad leaves develop into a canopy that shades the ground and competes with emerging w**ds.

🌧️ Soil protection: Established foliage covers exposed ground and helps protect the surface from rainfall.

In mild-winter regions with time for establishment, fall is a useful season for this living cover. Daikon needs no legume inoculant.

Cherry sweetness. Plum juiciness. California roots.

Sweet Treat Pluerry brings cherry-like sweetness and rich, juicy plum flavor to a small red fruit made for picking, snacking, and reaching for just one more. Developed by Zaiger Genetics, it has plum, cherry, peach, and apricot in its family tree.

Build a backyard tasting garden around it. Santa Rosa Plum adds bold sweetness and lively tang; Burgundy Plum brings mellow, low-tartness sweetness. Either provides the compatible pollen Sweet Treat needs, along with another delicious harvest.

Sweet Treat suits USDA Zones 6–9, but winter chill matters, too. Use our Orchard Planner to compare growing needs and choose your pairing.

Plant a patch that comes back year after year. 🌱

Egyptian Walking Onions have a clever way of growing their next generation: clusters of little onions, called topsets, form at the tips of tall stalks. As they grow heavier, the stalks bend toward the soil, where the bulbs can take root—giving these perennial onions their “walking” name.

Snip young green leaves to use like scallions in eggs, soups, and roasted vegetables. The small underground bulbs and topsets are edible, too. Save a few topsets to replant and leave part of the clump growing for future harvests.

Give them a sunny spot with good drainage, in a dedicated bed or roomy container. Fall planting works where soil remains workable.

Your USDA Zone is the starting point—not the whole growing story. 🌱

Our new USDA Growing Zone Guides help you choose plants with your climate in mind. Pair three pieces of information for better decisions:

❄️ Winter hardiness: USDA Zones describe average annual extreme minimum winter temperatures. Check that a tree’s listed range includes your exact zone.

🌼 Frost dates: Local spring and fall frost patterns help you plan planting and harvest. Even a winter-hardy fruit tree can lose blossoms to a late spring frost.

🌳 Chill hours: Many deciduous fruit trees need winter chill for normal budbreak and fruiting. Compare each variety’s requirement with your local conditions—winter survival alone doesn’t guarantee a crop.

Growing in Zone 7 or below? Pay close attention to winter limits, bloom timing, and your frost-free season. Gardening in Zone 9? Check chill requirements as well as frost exposure.

Your October garden: 5 things to do now. 🍂

October looks different in every garden. Some of us are still sowing greens; others are gathering the last tomatoes before frost. Start with your local forecast, then pick the next job that fits your patch.

🌱 Choose what you can still plant.
Cool-season greens and quick radishes may have time where fall stays mild. Check days to maturity against your expected frost—and allow extra time as daylight dwindles.

🧄 Make a plan for garlic and shallots.
Choose varieties suited to your winters and prepare a sunny, well-drained bed. Planting time depends on your climate; colder regions generally plant garlic in fall before the ground freezes.

🌷 Think ahead to spring flowers.
Plant spring-flowering bulbs as soils cool, following each variety’s regional guidance. Wildflower sowing also depends on your climate and species: fall rains suit some regions, while cold-climate dormant sowing waits until seeds won’t sprout before winter.

🍃 Cover open soil.
Sow a suitable cover crop while there’s time for it to establish, or protect empty beds with mulch.

🧺 Finish the harvest and get ready for cold.
Gather frost-sensitive crops before a freeze, remove diseased plant material, and have covers ready for tender plants you want to protect.

A few well-timed jobs now can make the next season easier.
