Quick myth-buster for anyone planning a new home or a big renovation: a tightly sealed house isn't automatically a healthy one.
Older homes got fresh air by accident, through all the gaps and cracks in the walls. Seal those up (which you should, for energy efficiency and comfort) and that fresh air has to come from somewhere else. That's where mechanical ventilation comes in, and why it needs to be part of the plan from day one, not an afterthought.

Showvaker Residential Design earned two honors at this year's American Residential Design Awards, hosted by the American Institute of Building Design.

The Sonoran Desert Residence received an ARDA in the Working Drawings category. That recognition means a lot to me. Working drawings are the unglamorous, technical backbone of a project. They're what actually gets a house built right, and they don't usually get much attention. Seeing this project honored for that work confirms the buildability-first approach I've built this practice around.

I was also honored with the Grand ARDA for my work as a panelist with AIBD this year. Being part of the conversation that shapes how residential design gets recognized and elevated has been a privilege.

Grateful for the AIBD community and for every client who's trusted me with their home.

Most of us want to stay in the home we love, not leave it. The smartest way to make that possible isn't a remodel down the road. It's a few good decisions made while the home is still on paper.
Single-level living, wider doorways, a no-step entry, and a curbless shower don't have to look "accessible" at all. They just make a home easier to live in from day one, for everyone. And almost all of them are inexpensive to design in now and expensive to add later.
