Solar you can see.

At the Hawi Residence on Hawaiʻi Island, net-zero was non-negotiable from day one. So instead of hiding the system, we made it part of the architecture: an overhead solar awning built with about 30 Lumos Vision modules, supplemented by additional PV to meet the home's energy needs.

Our architects and in-house solar install team worked side by side from the start, designing around a system that was meant to be seen. The array, the water infrastructure and the other sustainable systems are visible throughout the property, part of the experience of the home.

Off grid in Hawi also means planning every material and every piece of equipment ahead, and it means real energy independence through intense weather and outages.

Designing a school rooted on Maui.

A first look at early concept renderings for our Mass Timber School Project. Learning spaces are organized around courtyards and covered play areas, with a dining commons that opens towards Haleakalā. The campus is designed for wind and sun, with the goal of a net-zero-energy school.

Mass timber brings warmth, strength and a lower carbon footprint to the places keiki learn every day. Exposed wood structure, natural light and open air connections make the building part of the lesson.

Shade that pays for itself.

A solar canopy over the lanai. It cools the outdoor living space and feeds the house from the same structure. Exposed steel framing, a standing seam roof, and deep overhangs are built for Maui sun and trade winds, with the view left open.

Off grid doesn't have to mean giving anything up. It just means designing smarter from the start.

Keeping foam out of the landfill. At Hawaii Off Grid, waste surfboard foam is diverted from the Maui landfill, ground into beads and cast into Surf Block walls. Each block is about 85% recycled foam, non-combustible and wildfire resilient. Less waste in the ground, more resilient homes, made on Maui.

Mahalo, Central Maui, for showing up.

Families and neighbors came out to both sessions of Informational Open House II for the New Central Maui School, Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon in the Cafetorium at Puʻu Kukui Elementary. You walked the boards, from the site plan and site access to how culture, art and place can shape the campus, and you talked story with our team. Every question and idea helps shape a school that reflects this community.

Phase I opens as a middle school in 2031, and the full campus will serve up to 1,650 students. We're proud to be the architect of record, and grateful to be designing it alongside the people it will serve.

Mahalo to the Hawaiʻi School Facilities Authority for hosting, and to everyone who brought their questions, their ideas and their ʻohana.

Future builders, meet the bunkhouse.

On September 18th, David and Matt welcomed University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students to the Habitat for Humanity mass timber bunkhouse we designed for the Lahaina rebuild. The group of architecture, urban planning, and engineering students came to Maui on a faculty-led trip, made possible by the Bowers + Kubota endowment, to learn about Lahaina's recovery through the lens of resilient construction.

Hard hats on, plans out, lots of good questions. We walked through how the mass timber structure goes together, what sits behind the wall wrap, and why building this way can be fast, strong, and warm to live in.

Mahalo to Professors Ho Kyung Lee and Eric Peterson of the UH Mānoa School of Architecture for bringing the group, and to Habitat for Humanity for sharing the site. The next generation of builders is paying attention.
