Ever wonder if your garden design is actually working? Today we’re walking through our borders in Upstate New York to show you exactly how we evaluate what stays, what goes, and why. Whether you're looking for landscape planning tips or garden design inspiration, evaluating your space is the best way to grow.
In this video, we're taking you through three distinct areas of our Zone 6a garden and sharing our design process for each: an area we both love, a border that needs significant improvement, and a space where we have different ideas on the next steps!
We evaluate every garden bed using these 4 design principles:
• Color Palette — Are we successfully incorporating the blue, red, yellow, and green foliage colors used throughout the garden?
• Texture & Form — Do contrasting foliage, flowers, and plant forms create enough visual interest?
• Seasonal Interest — Does the planting provide beauty through spring, summer, fall, and winter?
• The Honest Review — After living with the design, what worked, what didn't, and what would we approach differently?
From mature plant combinations that exceeded our expectations to diagnosing a mixed border that isn't quite right, we’re sharing the "why" behind every decision. Remember, garden design is never really finished—sometimes the best way to improve a garden is to give it time and look at it objectively.
