A little lavender experiment from Rugged Roots 💜

Some of our lavender has really struggled staying happy in nursery pots, so before we sell more, we’re continuing to test how it performs once planted in the ground.

And honestly… this is exactly why we wanted to share it.

Lavender can look pretty sad while it’s stressed, but that doesn’t always mean it’s a lost cause. We’re planting some of ours, watching how they respond, and learning what gives them the best chance to thrive in our Alabama conditions.

So if your lavender isn’t looking picture-perfect right now — don’t give up on them just yet. 🌿

Looking for privacy without starting with tiny trees? These Green Giant Arborvitae are already approximately 6 feet tall, and this set of 4 is $240 total — just $60 per tree!

For a privacy screen, we recommend planting approximately 8 ft apart. At that spacing, these four trees span 24 ft from the first trunk to the last and can eventually create roughly 25–30 ft of beautiful evergreen screening as they grow and fill in.

American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a fast-growing native shrub known for its eye-catching clusters of vibrant purple berries that ripen in late summer and fall. 🌿💜 Beyond its ornamental appeal in landscapes, this resilient plant provides exceptional wildlife value. The moisture-rich berries serve as an important food source for over 40 songbird species—including the American Robin, Brown Thrasher, and Eastern Towhee—as well as mammals like white-tailed deer, foxes, and squirrels. Historically, crushed beautyberry leaves were even used as a natural insect repellent against mosquitoes and biting flies. Growing plants is one of my favorite parts of what we do. 🌱

These little camellias are still early in their journey, but this is where it starts — small plants, fresh pots, new growth, and even a few tiny buds already forming.

As growers, we get to care for them through all the stages in between… watering, feeding, shaping, watching roots develop, watching new growth push, and waiting for the day they’re finally ready to leave Rugged Roots and go to their permanent home.

There’s something really special about knowing a plant started here this small and will eventually be growing in someone’s landscape for years to come.
