The storm has passed, so it’s time to get out and assess any damage; roofing damage particularly can cascade into other issues, so you’ll want to look as soon as it’s safe to do so. Here’s a checklist to help you get started:

✔️ Get pictures of the damage to help with insurance claims
✔️ Inspect your roof for missing shingles, tiles, or damaged sheeting if you have a metal roof. It’s important to patch any leaks as soon as possible to prevent water damage later, even if it’s temporary.
✔️ Clear gutters, rain spouts, and other drainage — water that has no place to go will find a path, and it will often lead to somewhere you don’t want it to go.
✔️ Check your siding, trim, and fascia. They work together to keep water from damaging areas you can’t see or access easily.
✔️ Take another look at your trees and trim off broken or split branches; not only will it alleviate immediate and future hazards, it will boost the tree’s resilience.
✔️ Check on your neighbors and pool resources — It’s important to start addressing pressing issues on your property, but once that’s in hand, you and your neighbors likely have different tools, skills, and experience to help each other recover much faster than everyone working alone.
