How big can you build a backyard shed without a permit in California? Is the limit 100, 120, or 200 square feet?

If you're planning a backyard office, gym, art studio, or storage shed in the San Francisco Bay Area, there's something you should know before starting construction.

In many California cities, detached, single-story storage sheds of 120 square feet or less may qualify for a building permit exemption. But that doesn't automatically mean a finished backyard office or gym is exempt.
