Hello all! Happy fall. Our pigs go to slaughter this week. Yep this week. They will be butchered by Cunningham’s Meats. They can cut or season however you like. Sausage bacon, ham or whatever you like. Our price is $4.25 per pound of the hanging weight, paid to us and the additional cost of butchering you pay to Cunningham’s. See if your friends and fam want to go in on a hog! We sell half and whole hogs (a whole is usually between 90 and 110 lbs hanging weight. Let us know if you want bigger or smaller) This is a smaller breed so cuts and roasts are smaller than the industrial pork standards, but thankfully the flavor and nutrient density makes it big, darn it! Please share this with local meat eaters who want to support local agriculture. Thanks! Eat on! You can message or call/text at 724-769-3276 or email [email protected]

Portrait of a Tomato Part 2 by Bob. We have now been here running this business for 11 years. Over that time we have met some real characters and many of them have suggested tomato varieties. Cassandra has had the courage to try out several of the suggestions. This one i wanted to share. Tons of people come in here asking for the best sauce/paste tomato variety. Several years ago a gentleman really got on us about trying Pony Express and Cassandra decided to do a side by side comparison with Romas, Amish Paste and San Marzano. Pony Express produced more pound for pound. They are shaped like a Roma but are bigger and taste great. If you’re trying to make a bunch of sauce or salsa try out Pony Express. (Note you can use any tomato to make sauce. Sauce tomatoes typically have less water content so take less time to cook down) Thank you for your time. May the sauce be with you.

Haven’t had time to shop for your garden plants yet? Don’t fear! We’ll be open tomorrow morning (Memorial Day) from 9-noon! The weather has been less than ideal this spring, so while we’re normally closed on Memorial Day, we decided to seize the morning and sell some plants. Hope you can stop by!

Portrait of a Tomato by Bob
In the 1970s my parents moved to a farm near Bedford PA to try out country living. They lived by a multi generational farm, the Oldham family farm. The Oldhams gave them lots of help and tips on farm life. They also gave them seeds for a tomato they had never seen before. They fell in love with the tomato and never went back. It became the staple tomato in our garden, kitchen, and tall tales of summers passed. Meaty, balanced flavor, few seeds and very little snotty jelly. May I introduce to you the Oxheart tomato. Known as an eastern European heirloom tomato. It first appeared in American seed catalogs in the 1920s. The fruits are usually large yet sometimes you get a couple tennis ball sized ones. All are delicious and have an amazing texture. I can’t wait to eat one this summer. If you have space in your garden and love beefsteak tomatoes, please find room in your heart for oxhearts. I think you will not be disappointed. Happy planting season!
