Open shelving isn’t easier—in fact, it can be more difficult than traditional cabinetry.

Why? Because it’s far less forgiving. Every measurement, every cut, every transition, and every detail is exposed. There’s nowhere to hide imperfections.

In this video, you can see exactly why open shelving requires precision from the very beginning.

At NG Platinum Homes, the details matter—especially the ones you can see.

Episode 68 of Design Discussions with Nadine takes us inside an industry I find absolutely fascinating: custom furniture.

Our guest, Jason Fricke, owner of Helmwood, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to run a custom furniture manufacturing company—from craftsmanship and design to production, problem-solving, and the business behind creating truly one-of-a-kind pieces.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into bringing a custom piece of furniture from an idea to a finished product, this is an episode you’ll want to watch.

3 Things to Consider When Building a Custom Pantry

1️⃣ Think about what you’ll actually be storing.
Plan your shelving, cabinet heights, and layout around the items you use—not the other way around.

2️⃣ Plan your lighting and outlets early.
Good lighting makes a huge difference, and strategically placed outlets give you flexibility for small appliances and future needs.

3️⃣ Make it look as good as it functions.
Your pantry will often be visible with the door open, so choose shelving, finishes, and materials that complement the rest of your kitchen.

A custom pantry shouldn’t just provide more storage—it should be functional, organized, and beautiful. Our collaborator Kyleen Bushroe Interiors did an amazing job planning this pantry in our Silver Iris project.

Where two continents meet, so do two worlds of design.

Standing on the European shore of the Bosphorus, with Asia just across the water, Dolmabahçe Palace is one of world’s great architectural masterpieces.

Commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I and completed in 1856, the palace was designed by members of the celebrated Balyan family of Ottoman-Armenian architects.

Its extraordinary architecture brings together Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical European influences with the grandeur and traditions of Ottoman palace design. From monumental waterfront façades and sweeping staircases to crystal chandeliers, gilded ceilings, intricate parquet floors and richly detailed interiors, virtually every surface was designed to make a statement.

Dolmabahçe is more than a palace. It is an architectural conversation between East and West, positioned quite literally between Europe and Asia.

Math and science aren’t just for classrooms—they’re on the jobsite every single day.

Even the smallest construction task comes down to measurements, geometry, angles, tolerances, materials, and physics. A fraction of an inch may seem insignificant, but over distance, those tiny discrepancies compound—and suddenly a “small” mistake isn’t small anymore.

That’s why we measure, calculate, verify, and then verify again.

Great construction isn’t guesswork. It’s math + science + craftsmanship working together.

The details may be small. The calculations behind them aren’t.

I want to thank our Structural engineer Eric Homburg for explaining the math behind this wall removal and if you need a top notch structural engineer, he is your go to guy. You can watch the full 7 minute - super boring - two guys talking math - video in our YouTube channel.

Milano Design Week is the epitome of not only design, but also building materials. For six days every year, Milano becomes the see-and-be-seen destination for the design and construction world.

At nearly five times the size of KBIS, this show has a way of humbling you—and overwhelming your senses—like no other design event in the world.

Nadine has attended Milano Design Week five times since 2021, and she has learned how to navigate this massive event from the perspective of someone traveling from the U.S.

In this video, we briefly cover the logistics behind Milano Design Week: where to stay, what to eat, how to get around, and most importantly, how to plan your days so you can efficiently experience both the showgrounds and the incredible design events throughout the city.

We also mention some amazing friends, places, and companies that have become part of our Milano experience over the years:
