Tomorrow at 5pm ct I'll be hosting the live Q&A portion of our "How to Grow Native Plants from Seed" online class where I'll be answering submitted questions including making soil mixes with native soils and DIY hoophouses. There's still time to sign up and tune in! Did you know I made these hoophouses by myself using the same material used to make chainlink fences? They're not perfect but they've survived a couple of hurricanes and have protected millions of plants so theyre good enough for me.

PROPAGATION NATION
Our class "How to Grow Native Plants from Seed" has been released!
A day after I announced this class earlier this month, I received an email that this site in north Harris county we've been collecting seeds at for the past couple of years was starting to get bulldozed. The plants from this site became a central theme in this presentation, as we told our story of propagating plants from nearby threatened remnant prairies. Sign up to see where some of these plants ended up and to see more footage like this of me bumping up these Narrowleaf Mountain Mints from this site.

1) Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, Narrowleaf Mountain Mint
2-3) Amsonia repens, Creeping Bluestar
4)Eupatorium mohrii, Mohr's Thoroughwort
5-6) Pityopsis tenuifolium, Narrowleaf Silk Grass
7-9) Eupatorium serotinum, Late Boneset
10)Rhexia mariana, Maryland Meadowbeauty

In just a few generations, over 9 million acres of ancient remnant coastal prairies have been destroyed. We have less than 1 % of these prairies left and even the ones that have been protected are facing mounting threats.

NEW PLANT UNLOCKED - Gaillardia aestivalis var. flavorivens or Yellow Sandhill Blanketflower is the newest species we are working on offering next year. I first met this plant last summer in north Harris County on a piece of land slated for development. I was only able to harvest a pinch of seeds from a few plants but that was all I needed to start cultivating this beauty. I've been harvesting seeds every day for the past couple of months from these plants and expect to have more than enough for everyone in the spring.
Learning how to grow native plants from seed found in the wild has given me the ability to grow an abundance of plants from just a small sample of seeds. This has allowed me the opportunity to share and spread many plants that are under unprecedented threats. It brings me joy and hope to be a part of conservation efforts and I want to help others who are also on this journey.
Our new class offering "How to Grow Native Plants from Seed" shares how we do this work from our backyard, so that we can collaborate with others on a shared mission of conservation and restoration.

Today we are stepping into the next chapter of our nursery and introducing the first in a series of online classes: Growing Native Plants from Seed. This is a detailed look at our operation with step-by-step instructional videos and resources to give you the tools to grow quality native plants. I have been teaching gardening locally for 15 years and giving presentations on this topic for the last 5 years. I am excited to start offering this to more growers across Texas and beyond. We’ve been investing in equipment specifically to document the critically imperiled Gulf Coast Prairie and produce quality educational materials. I am confident every grower, beginner or seasoned, will learn something new here.
This video presentation will include printable resources and is available to purchase now under the new “Education" tab on our website or at the link in our bio. Everything will be released on August 23, 2026, with a follow up live Q&A on August 30. We are offering this for $50 until the end of August, and $60 after.
Our hope is to inspire others to grow more native plants for the restoration of our disappearing nature, and to plug growers in to the endless opportunities that come with growing native plants.
We want to make this accessible for everyone, so If you are experiencing financial hardship and know this can benefit you, please contact us to discuss scholarship opportunities.

We have some special plants we’ll be offering for sale tomorrow. The rare Coreopsis intermedia collected by Akash Munshi , a selection of Narrowleaf Mountain Mint we found with ɴᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴛ ʀᴇꜱᴄᴜᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴊᴇᴄᴛ - ᴛᴇxᴀꜱ that smells like fruit loops, and Carex Glaucescens, Blue Sedge collected by the legendary botanist Jake Smith. Even the common species have a story like our Blue Mist Flower and Chalky Bluestem collected from this field, one of the last stands of remnant prairie in Pasadena. There’s less than 1% of coastal prairie left so join us in our shared mission of reintroducing our native plants back into our landscape before they’re all gone.

8 months after planting and our plants are thriving. This Houston Parks Board planting is open to the public to see up close near the corner of I-45 and River Dr. Our plants are grown with lots of care, from the time seeds are collected in the field, all the way through planting, fertilizing, bumping up, cutting back, hardening off, and delivering. If you have a similar planting in the works, now is a good time to contact us about contract growing plants for this fall or next spring 🌱

One of the biggest joys of planting a garden is discovering insects you’ve never seen before. These Wavy-lined Emerald Moth caterpillars were a new one for us when we planted our first flower garden here. These caterpillars attach pieces of flowers onto themselves to hide from predators, and are mainly attracted to flowers in the aster family. Plant it and they will come. Happy pollinator week!
