Material choices shape a building's character from the first glance. Texture, finish, scale, and placement work together to create contrast, depth, and a stronger sense of identity.

Combining materials such as brick, metal, and glass can break up large surfaces, introduce variation through shifts in plane and shadow, and give the exterior a more layered expression. These details help the building feel cohesive while still giving key areas their own visual emphasis.

At Thiel Design Group, materials are selected with purpose to create architecture that feels considered, distinctive, and connected to the vision behind it.

Sun, sand, and a little friendly competition made for a great day in Galveston.

We had an incredible time teaming up with REES and Hoar Construction for the AIA Houston Sandcastle Competition. From digging in to cheering each other on, it was a great day spent creating, collaborating, and having some fun outside the office.

Thanks to everyone who came out, pitched in, and helped make it such a memorable day!

Great architecture starts with people.

This year’s World Architecture Day theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”, is a reminder of the responsibility architects have to design spaces that support the people and communities they serve.

At Thiel Design Group, that responsibility guides every project. From healthcare and higher education to science and technology, we approach design with purpose, considering how each space will function, adapt, connect, and support the people who use it.

Architecture is so much more than the building itself. Truly great architecture creates places that work well, feel intentional, and make a meaningful difference in everyday life.

Today, we celebrate the importance of architecture and the people who bring thoughtful spaces to life.

In renovation work, creating more space does not always mean adding square footage. Sometimes, it means looking up.

By opening the ceiling and exposing the structure and building systems above, a previously compressed interior can gain a greater sense of height and openness. In a teaching lab, that added volume also creates room for the technical systems the space depends on while keeping the area below open and adaptable for learning, instruction, and hands-on work.

At Thiel Design Group, volume is designed with purpose to make the most of existing space and create environments that work harder for the people and programs within them.

We’re ready to trade drawings and details for sand and sunshine this weekend!

This is our first time participating in the AIA Houston Sandcastle Competition, and we are excited to team up with REES and Hoar Construction, LLC. We are looking forward to a fun day of creativity, collaboration, and seeing what our teams can build together outside of the office.

Come find us on the beach and say hello!

Here’s a story about a growing architecture firm.

It starts with a team that loves what they do, pays attention to the details, and keeps finding new opportunities to help clients bring their ideas to life.

Then came more projects. More collaboration. More growth.

And eventually, a need for a little more room.

So, we’re packing up THIEL and moving to a new home.

Beginning October 5, you’ll find us at: 5353 West Alabama, Suite 509, Houston, Texas 77056

Our phone number will stay the same, but be sure to update our address in your contacts.

We can’t wait to settle in, make the space our own, and share a few photos once the boxes are unpacked.

Here’s to what’s next for THIEL!

Every seat in a lecture hall plays a role in how the space functions and feels. The rise between rows, the curve of the seating, the placement of aisles, and the connection to the teaching area all work together to shape how people see, listen, move, and participate.

When those details are considered as one system, a large learning space can feel more connected and intentional. Each decision supports the next, creating a room where visibility, access, technology, and interaction all work together.

At Thiel Design Group, tiered seating is designed with purpose because the experience of a learning environment is shaped by the details of every seat, not just the room as a whole.

Celebrating 3 years of Yori at THIEL!

Three years in, and Yori is still finding new ways to learn, grow, and take on what comes next at THIEL.

Since joining the team, she has gained experience across healthcare and higher education renovation projects, building her technical skills while developing a deeper understanding of how thoughtful planning, coordination, and communication shape a successful project.

Yori especially values the opportunity to be hands-on throughout her projects. From drafting construction documents to coordinating with consultants, each project has given her a new perspective and another opportunity to strengthen her architectural knowledge and attention to detail.

She also values the close-knit culture at THIEL and the support of the people around her. That combination of hands-on experience, teamwork, and continuous learning has made the past three years especially rewarding.

Yori, we’re glad you’re part of the THIEL team and excited to see where all that curiosity, dedication, and attention to detail take you next. Happy 3-year anniversary!

The spaces people move through every day deserve as much attention as the destinations themselves. Hallways, elevator lobbies, and other transition areas are opportunities to guide movement, reinforce a building's character, and create moments of visual interest along the way.

Thoughtfully integrated details add rhythm, dimension, and continuity, helping these spaces feel intentional. The result is a more cohesive environment that supports orientation, encourages connection, and creates a stronger sense of place. At Thiel Design Group, movement is designed with purpose to because the journey through a building is just as important as where it leads.

Within active environments, even a small degree of separation can make a meaningful difference. A recessed bench, a tucked-away niche, or a shift in scale can create a place where someone can step back without feeling disconnected from the space around them.

These quieter moments offer privacy and breathing room throughout the day. They can give a family space for a private conversation, provide staff with a brief pause, or help someone collect their thoughts before moving on.

At Thiel Design Group, quiet corners are designed with purpose to create moments of privacy, reflection, and renewal within the larger environment.
