Everything is very green around the garden, and we are almost ready for this weekend’s workshop! Orchard flowers are blooming, pumpkin rows are layered, and the paths through Christmas Valley are freshly mowed.

My first no-dig bed at Iranui Garden was a simple herb garden under the dappled shade of my cherry tree. The ground was hard clay, and I didn’t have much to layer, so I cut the grass short, laid cardboard down, piled grass on top, watered it all, and let nature do its thing. Herbs were tucked in with compost blankets, and to my surprise, it all flourished. The soil is now black and crumbly, and the herbs still grow - a testament to how well this method works.

Since then, I’ve made countless no-dig beds in lots of different areas and for lots of different kinds of plants, veggies, and flowers using a very similar method of layering browns and greens. At my upcoming course, we will look into this method, why it works, and how it can work in your own garden.

If you’re close to Pahiatua or within driving distance, please join us by grabbing tickets at the link in my profile.

Sometimes flowers sell, sometimes they don’t, and either way, sometimes it’s hard to know why. This tulip posy had no takers this week, and so I was the lucky girl who gifted flowers to herself.

Sometimes the afternoon light hits just right, and the garden feels like it’s the only place I’m meant to be. This week I’m working on getting things in order for summer while I thankfully have a moment off. Today I’ve been layering my pumpkin patch rows, mulching my veggie gardens, clearing out extra limbs, and mowing, mowing, mowing. I’ll be inviting people into my garden next weekend for this year’s permaculture course, and I can’t wait to chat about what my partner and I have done the past five years and how we keep things growing. There are still so many things we want to do here, but I’m pretty proud to have a place that feels just right on evenings like this one. Derrick Sims
