If you live in a hot and humid climate like I do (zone 9 Houston), you may be RELIEVED to see some cooler temps finally on the horizon. SO ARE YOUR PLANTS! Now is the time to get out and get your hands dirty.
October is a busy month for a Houston gardener. Even though the days are toasty, the nights are finally dipping, giving plants a much needed rest and helping them to start putting energy back into roots and blooms.
Fall here is basically "Second Spring" and we definitely want to take advantage of it. I will be planting bulbs like daffodils, anemones, and ixia in the coming month or two as well as relocating struggling perennials, putting in new garden beds, adding foundational plants, and sowing seeds to overwinter until they pop in spring.
