Planning a custom home? Watch to see why the details on paper matter long before construction begins.

In this week’s Studio Chat, Mark explains how a full construction document set brings architectural plans, interior design decisions, and builder input together.

For clients who choose CDG’s project specification service, that detail goes even further. Our 200-page document identifies the materials and selections that builders and trades need to price and execute the work, helping carry your vision through to construction.

A quieter architectural moment between spaces.

Positioned between the kitchen and family living area, this casual dining space creates a natural transition between the two. The arched opening frames the room from one direction, while its openness keeps it connected to the rhythm of daily life around it.

Good residential architecture considers the spaces between the destinations, too. Here, the casual dining area becomes part of the circulation of the home rather than simply another room.

Come for the golf. Stay for game night.

In this Houston custom home, the golf simulator room is becoming a gathering place for the whole family. Mark shares how a Full Swing simulator brings golf practice, sports viewing and interactive games into one air-conditioned space, giving everyone a place to play away from the Texas heat.

Would you use this room for your golf game or family game night?

Volume changes the way a room feels.

Soaring ceilings give this great room its sense of scale, while the expansive glazing keeps that volume connected to the landscape, pool and outdoor living beyond. Its relationship to the kitchen also allows the two spaces to function together without losing their individual architectural identities.

A room designed around proportion, connection and view.

If you stopped scrolling, you’re in good company.

Our two-floor library reel has passed 1.3 million views, and we’re grateful for every share, save, and conversation it has sparked.

Haven’t seen what’s upstairs? Watch the original reel pinned at the top of our profile. Help us reach 2 million views by sharing it with someone who would love a library like this.

The library that has captured quite a bit of attention.

Located just off the entry, this two-story library was designed as an architectural experience of its own. A concealed staircase connects the two levels, while the circular opening above creates a visual connection between floors and draws the eye toward the domed ceiling.

From the proportions of the room to the geometry overhead, the architecture creates a framework for layers of detail throughout the space.

And yes, there is still more to see.

The first impression of a home is about more than the front door.

In this Spanish Mediterranean project, a series of arches establishes the architectural language from the entry and carries it into the formal dining and living spaces beyond. Long sightlines allow each room to feel distinct while maintaining a visual relationship to the spaces around it.

A collaboration in every sense of the word.

After following this home through construction, Mark sits down with Susie of Marion Interior Design | Austin, TX to talk about how the architecture and interiors came together. The vision for a modern Mediterranean home called for a balance of scale, softness, color and architectural detail, with each discipline informing the next.

From the two-story library to the finishes throughout the home, it’s a look at what can happen when architect, interior designer, builder and client work together from a shared vision.

A memorable night for Collaborative Design Group at the 2026 Ruby Awards!

We’re honored to have received two awards recognizing our work in architecture and design, with wins in the Commercial Small Firm category for Commercial Multi-Family/Corporate Housing and the Residential Large Firm category for Large Renovation.

We’re grateful for the clients, collaborators, and project teams who trust us to bring these spaces to life. It was a wonderful evening celebrating great design and the people behind it!

You never know where Mark is going to pop up next.

Behind this hidden door is the equipment that will power one of the most requested spaces we’re designing right now: a golf simulator.

But creating a room like this takes much more planning than simply finding space for a screen. Flooring recesses, ceiling height, orientation, seating and equipment all have to be accounted for early in the architectural process.

And golf is only the beginning. This space was designed to transition from simulator to arcade to home theater, giving the family plenty of ways to use it.
